Flashback to the summer of 1996. Having already been a huge fan of The Jesus Lizard for some time, thanks to the "Liar" & "Down" albums, a friend from high school told me he had a record of their's I had not heard. It was in fact, "Goat". He explained to me that, at the time, it was an extremely hard record to find. It was considering this was before you could find virtually anything on the internet and northwest Georgia is not known for it's wide array of independent record stores!!!!
One day I took him up on the taunt and before i knew it the rumbling bassline and thundering drums of "Then Comes Dudley" exploded from his record player's speakers. For the next thirty minutes that followed, I sat dumbfounded and completely in awe of what beautiful dissonance I was hearing. From Duane Denison's jagged guitar licks to David Yow's David Lynch-ian style lyrics delivered in Yow's trademark drunken babbling meets psychotic breakdown yelps, it quickly became one of my all-time favorites.
Now wonderfully remastered, the songs now have tighter edges than it seemed they once had. However, the sound of this album is the same classic that I fell in love with over 16 years ago!!!

This golly darn record which came directly in the middle of their oeuvre is devotee material. Not only is it loud, generally fast and monolithic it's pretty universal too. I played this for Pantera fans, nothing harder than AC/DC listeners and people leaning toward art rock and it was a generally accepted as rocking.

Not to plug it too much, the Jesus Lizard's patent razor-wire rock riffs inspired a million and one tattoos already, but it was such well-orchestrated synergy. But it would be difficult to get a band together with the stage presence and chops of Duane Dennison who plays guitar like he's ringing a bell. David Wm. Simms steady grooves and menacing stage presence made the band look like it was always ready to kick your band's ass. Mac Mcneilly probably the most underrated focal point of the band's dynamic had the bounce to keep it from the crusty wooden drawing board all those Birthday Party comparisons always dredged up.

For all those ritualistic cowboy surfer jams that worked so well in new wave's nascence the Jesus Lizard was engineered with the stamina of a working band that lit up your town on record and their notorious frequent concerts too.

In terms of songwriting, you had an even balance of pissed off and flick your bic tunes with some cool twists to keep you listening on this record. It's a toss up if this is better or Liar.

Jesus Lizard is one of those bands that has an absolutely distinctive sound. Once you're familiar with them, you can hear a Jesus Lizard song that you've never heard before in your life and still know instantly that it's them. The Ramones and AC/DC are two other examples of this phenomenon. However, every band has that one "best" album, and Goat is Jesus Lizard's. All of the songs are very strong, but pay extra close attention to the album's one-two knockout punch of Mouth Breather and Nub. To this day I believe those are the two best songs the band ever wrote. If you've heard of Jesus Lizard but never actually heard them and are curious, I say this is the album to buy. If you like it, you'll probably like Head/Pure, Liar, and Down. Those are my four favorites and the only ones I really recommend. I believe it was after recording Down that drummer Mac McNeily left the band and they stopped using Albini as their producer. They were just never the same from then on. I'm not anti-change, per se. But to my ears, there was an undeniable decline.

I used to think that Jesus Lizard was 100% original and unique. Then I heard The Birthday Party. I felt exactly the same way I did when I finally found out that there was no Santa Claus, or that Fugazi is actually just a big rip off of Gang of Four. But I got over it.

My son said The Jesus Lizard is a tremendous live band so I bought this Cd. It's different but that's what I like, and there are some live cuts on this effort so I'm satisfied. Go Lizards!
