That said, when this book first came out in 1968, both of those approaches were somewhat new and novel.
Personally, I read this book about the time I left my day job behind and became an independent consultant and, like many people, I had an aversion to "Sales."
Boy did this book change my mind.
I vividly remember one quote from the first time I read it, about how the salesman can multiply earnings - seeing a rock-filled field, he imagines the field growing corn, and works to make it happen, seeing a ten-fold profit. That thought - that salesfolk can create value, can "make" this happen, had a huge impact on me and how I viewed myself.
The book is a nice evening fireside read. It's not challenging. You might want to come back to it a few times, reread sections. Once you've mastered the intellectual concepts, the motivational concepts may be worth revisiting.
Some of the terms (salesMAN) in the book are not PC, but they predate the modern women's movement. Ignore the bad, focus on the good, and I think you might have a book you really enjoy.
Four stars out of five, mostly because the book is a bit dated, and you'll have to suspend your disbelief, which can be hard at times. If I could give it four and a half, I would.
Whether you're selling door-to-door, over the phone, or just trying to convince your spouse to consider your point of view, you MUST read Og Mandino's classic.
First published in 1968, "The Greatest Salesman in the World" tells the story of Hadif, a lowly camel boy who overcomes his humble origins to become a man of incredible power, position, and wealth.
The secret to Hadif's success? Ten scrolls that were passed on to him by his adoptive father.
Each scroll is inscribed with a powerful truth. For example, Scroll II enjoins the reader to "greet each day with love in your heart". On Scroll VI the reader is taught that "Weak is he who permits his thoughts to control his actions; strong is he who forces his actions to control his thoughts".
And so on.
Ten scrolls; ten lessons that, if applied, have the power to transform your life.
Don't let the apparent simplicity of this philosophy fool you. This isn't some facile, pie-in-the-sky fantasy on offer here. The secrets unlocked in this slim little book are truly profound ... but only if you choose to apply them to your life.
Mandino suggests reading each scroll three times per day for a full month. Why? So that the philosophy they convey is translated to your innermost being ... knit into your brain, and heart, and bones ... and lodged permanently in your subconscious. I'm in the process of doing just that and already I'm noticing a difference in the way I respond to the world and the way it responds to me.
Get yourself a copy of "The Greatest Salesman in the World". The prose is lovely, the plot is engaging, and the philosophy it shares will be an invaluable asset to your life.
I can recommend it wholeheartedly.
