This edition has a G-Dec SD card with presets that automatically adjust your G-Dec amplifier to approximate the Hendrix's tone as you play along. The Hal Leonard people did a good job with this, and the results are a close approximation. We should not be surprised that it is not perfect, given the large stack amps and special effect pedals Hendrix was using back in '69. A small modeling amp can only come so close to the original tone of someone like Hendrix, but it was close enough. The backing tracks were excellent, and nearly identical to the original recordings as was the case with the CD version. The backing tracks come in two versions, one with the lead guitar track, and another without, allowing you to fill in the missing part. Of course, there is tablature as well.
In short, the key to playing better is practice, practice! This series, whether you buy the CD version or the G-Dec version, will encourage you practice more with the music you love, and that will surely make you a better guitarist!
It's unfortunate that Fender dropped the G-DEC line of amps (probably because they were over priced and over complicated for the novice/beginner user, which is whom they were primarily aimed at) but if you own one of these amps I think that these books are a great tool and resource for learning.
They do require some knowledge of reading tablature and some intermediate playing skill (would not be recommended for a beginner - unless perhaps under the tutelage of an instructor). It's unfortunate that only a few of the original titles are still available. Unfortunately, I'm sure that someday Hal Leonard publishing may discontinue them altogether.
I know that you could put this package together for free using on line resources (tabs, backing tracks etc.) and you could create your own preset tones, but for $25 bucks having it all in a book format and the leg work done for you, I think, is worth it.
Keep on rockin'
Now to the book. I bought this for my son who has been playing guitar for about 3 years. He's 16 years old and has taken to studying Hendrix' songs. He's fairly knowledgeable when it comes to reading tabs, but this book has pushed him in to a different area of playing because now he has to understand the timing that Hendrix had. It's one thing to know the strings to play, it's another to understand how to slide into a transition the way Hendrix did. I recommend using this book and supplementing it with the various videos online to fully understand the nuances of each song.
The background tracks provided on the SD card are excellent and well-timed. Based on my experience with this book I will be purchasing other books from this series.
The presets are good
The backing tracks are even better, and since the sd card has 2 files for each song(1 backing track w/guitar 1 with out) you can record a section of the backing track w/ guitar as a phrase and slow it down and play along with it un till you get it right...That alone is worth 5 stars and part of it is because of the amp.
as always Amazon was quick to process the order.
The presets are good, but keep in mind that hendrix had a pedal board, and he would switch the fuzz, octaveier, etc. on and off during certain songs, and dont forget the wah in All Along the Watchtower...The presets are good, and in my opinion are somewhat gigable, in other words they would pass in certain situations. and if im only getting a 100 for a gig at a smokey bar where everyone is drunk and dont care anyway, why would I bring a expensive marshall stack when a gdec 3 30 costs 169 dollars and the presets of these songs can somewhat get the job done. the amp has outputs on the back for a PA or you can mike it, like everyone else does...
All in All great learning tool and high quality of backing tracks
