Présentation de l'éditeur

London, 1816
Cavalry captain Gabriel Lacey returns to Regency London from the Napoleonic wars, burned out, fighting melancholia, his career ended. His interest is piqued when he learns of a missing girl, possibly kidnapped by a prominent member of Parliament. Lacey's search for the girl leads to the discovery of murder, corruption, and dealings with a leader of the underworld. At the same time, he struggles with his own transition from a soldier's life to the civilian world, redefining his role with his former commanding officer, and making new friends--from the top of society to the street girls of Covent Garden.

Book 1 of the Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries.

Intéressant sans plus. Je préfère d'autres auteurs tels Liliana Hart ou l'auteur de Agatha Raisin. Mais comme j'aime aussi les romans historiques j'ai passé un bon moment

HASH(0x9954c33c) étoiles sur 5 I'm so glad I found this author. 13 avril 2006

If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would gladly do so. I thoroughly enjoyed my entire time of reading this book. Thankfully I started it when I could devote all my attention to it because that is what I ended up doing. Luckily I didn't have to feel guilty about ignoring those things I really should have been doing.

The historical time frame was superbly rendered. The character descriptions were so real that I feel I came to know the people and like or dislike them just as the author wished me to. The main character, Captain Gabriel Lacy, had just enough angst to make me sympathetic but not so much as to make me tired of hearing about his past. There was some mystery about an occurance in his past which was kept covered just long enough, with little bits and pieces revealed along the way to keep me curious. The conclusion was completely logical and satisfactory.

All in all, to my way of thinking, a superb way to spend my valuable time.

HASH(0x99489bc4) étoiles sur 5 3.5 Stars - Not a romance but still fairly likeable 2 octobre 2014

First of all, I want to address the concern of those saying this book contains explicit sex. Actual sex happens twice and then it's briefly mentioned in single paragraphs with zero description of the act itself. This is a regency crime/mystery and prostitutes are characters in it. Naturally, there are a handful of swear words and mild randy talk. I don't think it's fair to give the idea this story is full of descriptive sex when that isn't the case at all.

Now, on to my review. If you don't like stories written in first person, the steer clear. Not only is it written in first person, but it's written from the POV of a man, our Captain Lacey. Somehow, I thought there'd be some romance in here, but there wasn't. It's about the struggles of an ex-military man, who is poor, suffers lameness, depression and bouts of anger. Yet he holds onto his shaky honor. Getting to the "who done it" gets really convoluted. Lots of characters are introduced and sometimes the thread of his thoughts don't make the least bit of sense. Nevertheless, this is the first of the series and the Captain is likely to grow. If he doesn't then I won't continue with the series. This author has a decent style and for a free read, it was far better than expected.

HASH(0x99489b88) étoiles sur 5 An Enjoyable Mystery, A Likeable Hero, Left Me Wanting to Read the Next in the Series 20 juin 2009

Ashley Gardner has created an interesting and likable hero in her protagonist Captain Gabriel Lacy. A complex and honorable man with a complicated personal history. I liked his direct and often blunt approach to things. The author reveals her hero to us slowly and at the end of this particular mystery I found myself wanting to know more about Captain Lacy and his personal life.

The mystery was interesting, the period details well done, the characters realistic, the writing very good. I was pleased with this book and I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series. I'm disappointed that I didn't plan ahead and have the second book in the series in my hand so I could start reading it right away.

This book reminds me of Kate Ross' wonderful Julian Kestrel Mystery series. I would recommend them all if you like historical mysteries

I picked this up on a whim because of its (currently) low price on Kindle, and I'm glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Captain Lacey and some of the other characters in this series. There were a few small editing errors, as seems to be typical of some of the bargain ebooks, but nothing so distracting as to ruin my enjoyment of the story.

The mystery itself is interesting, and I didn't figure it out ahead of time; however, I admit I wasn't trying very hard because I just wanted to enjoy the story. There's also the sort of sub-mystery about the characters themselves: What happened between Lacey and Colonel Brandon? The pacing is great; I always felt like I was on the edge of my seat. And I wanted to know more about the people in the story. Fortunately, the author does a great job of letting us get to know Captain Lacey, Grenville, Marianne and the Brandons.

At the end, I wanted to read more. Luckily, there are several other books in the series, and all are being made available as ebooks. I admit I tore through them over a long weekend and am now impatiently waiting for the next tale.

The Kindle editions of these books, in order, are:
1) The Hanover Square Affair (Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries)
2) A Regimental Murder (Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries)
3) The Glass House (Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries)
4) The Sudbury School Murders (Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries)
4.5) The Necklace Affair (Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries) (a novella)
5) A Body in Berkeley Square (Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries)
6) A Covent Garden Mystery (to be re-released as an ebook in August 2011)
7) A Death in Norfolk (to be released September 2011)

This book is decently written. Intriguing mystery. However, there are places where is becomes unnecessarily crude. There are also places where it becomes too sexually explicit for my taste, places where it was not necessary for the plot. I'll take Austen, Georgette Heyer, or most of Stephanie Barron over this author any day. If crudity doesn't bother you, if sexual explicitness doesn't bother you, you will probably enjoy this book more than I did. I've decided that I am not willing to overlook either when looking for light reading.

I wish a previous reviewer had included these issues in her review. It would have saved me some time and money. I will be deleting this book from my library.
