3.0 étoiles sur 5 Okay, but not as great as it could have been 2 décembre 2014

The kindle version of this cookbook is now on sale for $2.99 so I bought it at that price. I've looked through it and some of the recipes look wonderful. Others look pretty good. But a few are puzzling in their inclusion. For example, Vertical Diner's Tofu Scramble recipe. I can make a better scrambled tofu than that without a recipe.

A lot of recipes are raw, which is okay but I would have preferred fewer of those. Some recipes are complicated and others are simple to make, it really varies by the restaurant, which is understandable.

I eat at Veggie Grill regularly and I don't believe the Veggie Grill recipes have been served at Veggie Grill in the past six years. I think they are just recipes the owner cooked up so he wouldn't have to give out any recipes from his restaurant menu. Honestly, I would have booted him from the book for this. People are purchasing the book to get some of the restaurant recipes.

I also think this could have been a stellar cookbook if Eric Brent and Glen Merzer had selected the restaurants for inclusion based on the quality of the recipes they submitted for inclusion, but it seems that instead the restaurants were chosen based on another agenda. Which is fine, I guess, but then don't bill it primarily as a cookbook. Call it The Happy Cow Book of Interviews with Vegan Restaurant Owners.

I'm happy enough with the book to feel okay about purchasing it for $2.99, but glad I didn't pay full price.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great concept 19 juin 2014

I just received the book and spent a few hours preparing a delicious dinner and dessert. I tried the "Roasted Spaghetti Squash, Cauliflower, Garlic and Mashed Potatoes with Porcini Mushroom Gravy and Praline Brownies." Since I'm new to vegan recipes, I started by making a few trips to the store for ingredients like agar powder and guar gum. The dinner was excellent, and very satisfying. The brownies left me wondering if there was a missing ingredient or if there was a misprint on one of the measurements as they never solidified, so it was more like a lava cake, and it didn't look like the picture in the book. If anyone figures this out, please post a comment. Also I noticed that the Chocolate Bunt Cake has no chocolate in it, is that normal?

I am so excited I finally got the book in the mail. I've been borrowing my sister's and finally got my own copy b/c I like it so much. I am not a vegan but love to cook and eat healthy. This book is not only a cookbook but also allows my imagination run wild and travel around the world thru my kitchen. I especially like the interviews with the restaurant owners. It gives me insight to their point of view thru food and why they cook vegan. I also like how beautiful and inspiring the photos are. So far, I've made Moroccan Tajine, Carrot Cake, and Quinoa Tabbouleh. All fairly easy and manageable to make (I am no chef but the food turned out delicious). Living in Los Angeles, we are lucky to have so many vegan-friendly healthy options but it can be very expensive to eat out as well. This HappyCow cookbook allows my husband and I to have the most delicious food w/out breaking the bank. Highly recommend, if not for the stories and photos alone :).
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Immediately ordered another copy 9 décembre 2016

I was going to give this book as a Christmas gift, but kept it for myself so I've just ordered a replacement copy :)

The recipes are very good (some are incredible) but I actually enjoyed the restaurant owner interviews even more than the recipes. It's absolutely fascinating to me to hear how each person decided to support vegan and vegetarian diets by opening a restaurant, and what they've learned in the process. I've been to several of these places, too, so that made it even more fun to read.

Many of the recipes are somewhat complicated, although someone who is more experienced at cooking than me won't have a hard time.

If you do any amount of travel, be sure to get this book so you can visit some of the places.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good for the kitchen proficient 9 septembre 2015

I was hoping that it would be more recipes and less talk. The recipes are good, albeit some are complicated. I think for the average home user, it would have been better to ask restaurants their most accessible/easy to make at home dishes for this book. I love it and all of the food I've made tastes great.
