4.0 étoiles sur 5 Theme: Live life to the fullest and be happy. 11 septembre 1998

This book wasn't the best Remarque book that I've read. In short it is about a race car driver, Clerfayt, who falls in love with a terminal ill patient, named Lillian. She finds a new lease on life after leaving the sanatorium with Clerfayt. Clerfayt leads a risky life on the edge, where as Lillian has lead a quiet, "safe" life in an attempt to be cured. Realizing her time is growing short, she feels she is ready for a big change.
Their roles reverse as the course of the book plays out, each gaining insight to the fallacies of the other person's lifestyle. Remarque throws a lot of wit and wisdom in the conversations and thoughts, which to me didn't seem normal. However, Remarque's characters, in all of his books, tend to be deep and thoughtful.
Overall, though, it was enjoyable departure from his typical WW2 books. Worth reading, but he has other better ones.

Even if you are the type to read Remarque's works, this is the most touching and real book i have read. It gives deep insights into love and live in general. The perfect book any hopeless romantic. I will remember this and insights forever.

Back in the late '70s I had seen the film Bobby Deerfield starring Al Pacino and Marthe Keller, based on this book, and the intriguing story led me to read this haunting romance. Lillian is dying of tuberculosis and resides in a sanatorium in the Alps, where wealthy people often hoped to find a cure. Clerfayt (renamed Bobby Deerfield in the movie, and based on the real life race car driver Alfonso de Portago) is a formula one driver whose car breaks down in Lillian's Swiss town and needs repairs, and they meet by chance in a restaurant. They become a couple, and set off driving around Europe on an odyssey of romantic discovery, living life to the fullest (staying at nice hotels, shopping, eating out) all the while aware of Lillian's unfortunate future. When you read that Clerfayt will be driving in Italy's Mille Miglia race (where de Portago met his untimely end), you realize that the tables may be turned regarding their destinies. Told from Lillian's point of view, E.M. Remarque's writing is absolutely prosaic, its the kind of book to savor and re-read, the book's title is so accurate, as in the old adage, "man makes plans while God laughs." Also try to see the movie which is now on DVD, as the actors are 100% true to the written characters.

For those who know and love All Quiet On The Western Front, this is a must. it is a sad story but the use of descriptive language is engaging and second to none. The narrative is calm and easy. The characters are credible and realistic and leap off the page. The descriptions of the sanitorium and staff are superb as is the journey made to Lago Maggiore where, incidentally, Remarque lived at the end of his life, in Ronco which is mentioned in the book. it is a beautiful story delightfully told and worthy od standing high above many similar novels in this genre.

I am a huge fan of Remarque's writing. Reading him is so refreshing because it is a constant reminder that great literature stands the test of time in a way that many contemporary best sellers never will. To me, All Quiet is one of the greatest novels ever written and I am eager to read the rest of Remarque's works because of what I have experienced in those I have read thus far.
