Présentation de l'éditeur

She understood women. She understood beauty. And she started a revolution.

Helena Rubinstein was born into a poor Polish family at the end of the nineteenth century; by the time of her death in 1965 she had built a cosmetics empire that spanned the world. When Rubinstein opened her first salon in Melbourne, her scientific approach to beauty was an instant sensation. Women just couldn't get enough of her innovative advice on skincare, and her beauty products were constantly sold out. Having conquered Australia, Rubinstein went on to open salons in Europe and America, at a time when women were barely seen in business, let alone running their own multinational companies. For this visionary entrepreneur lived and breathed her work and nobody - lover, husband or child - was allowed to get in the way of business success. Helena Rubinstein was a total original, and her legacy can still be seen today in the methods used to market and manufacture cosmetics. This is her amazing life story.

Madame was fascinating, but not particularly a likeable personality. Very interesting information about the spread of decades and the changes in the beauty industry during her lifetime. I had not realized how broad her influence had been on the formulation of facial creams and make up. I was also surprised by her artistic support of modern artists.

the name Helena Rubinstein was synonymous with complexion care during her long lifetime.
As a 20year old, I sought out her Skin Dew in the pharmacy of the small town where I taught.
With amazement and despair, I found lately that my beautician in her 40's had never heard of Helena Rubinstein.
That is why this biography is inspiring, informative and necessary especially in light of Helena's early Australian outback experience contrasting sharply with her home in Poland.
How this uneducated girl from a family of many daughters rose to be the toast of London, Paris and New York and an inspiration to leaders in society and the arts is a marvellous read for us women.
I recommend it thoroughly.

Worshipful, inspirational and possibly fantastical.

This is a tribute, indeed, to a genuinely amazing person who wrapped the world around her little finger and championed women's rights during the times around the world when women were receiving the right to vote.

There is a feel of the fantastic, and it is clear that the author has written quite lovingly of Helena Rubinstein. Overall a good read.

This is a well written book. A true story of the life of a very courageous woman who dragged herself out of poverty to better her life. So successful was she in improving her own life, she was soon able to help and improve the lives of many of her family members. The kind of determination and drive Helena Rubenstein had, consumed her life. Her husband and sons seem to have paid a high price for her success. Money offered her a very colorful life but it became her master, her tormentor as she learnt to use it to control the very people she loved most. A most interesting story, well worth reading about.

Helena Rubenstein: The Woman Who Invented Beauty is a free NetGalley ebook that I read during an early morning in October. What initially won me over about this book was its cover and how amazingly timeless it is.

Like its cover, this book is mostly illusion and fantasy. True quotes and events are merely dotted throughout, instead of being carefully analyzed and researched for clarity. All in all, Helena's story is transportive and heavily detailed, but way too starry-eyed and mishmashed with fiction.
