Présentation de l'éditeur

Tudor intrigue, murder and the dark arts - the second in an acclaimed historical series starring Dr John Dee

All talk is of the End-time... and the dead are rising.

At the end of the sunless summer of 1560, black rumour shrouds the death of the one woman who stands between Lord Robert Dudley and marriage to the young Queen Elizabeth. Did Dudley's wife, Amy, die from an accidental fall in a deserted house, or was it murder? Even Dr John Dee, astrologer royal, adviser on the Hidden and one of Dudley's oldest friends, is uncertain. Then a rash promise to the Queen sends him to his family's old home on the Welsh Border in pursuit of the Wigmore Shewstone, a crystal credited with supernatural properties.

With Dee goes Robert Dudley, considered the most hated man in England. They travel with a London judge sent to try a sinister Welsh brigand with a legacy dating back to the Battle of Brynglas. After the battle, many of the English bodies were, according to legend, obscenely mutilated. Now, on the same haunted hill, another dead man has been found, similarly slashed.

Devious politics, small-town corruption, twisted religion and a brooding superstition leave John Dee isolated in the land of his father.

Very well written exciting novel set in 16th century Wales. Mysteries, political intrigues, deep characters... a joy to read. One of the best historical fiction ever read.

L'écrire est parfois un peu confuse mais ce livre est dans l'ensemble assez agréable à lire. Not much else to say.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Dr. Dee and Dudley Team Up Again 9 juin 2013
Par C. Bennett - Publié sur Amazon.com

I was a big fan of The Bones of Avalon, so I was thrilled to find another addition to the Dr. Dee series by Phil Rickman. I hope there are many more to come!

This novel tackles one of the biggest questions in Tudor lore: Who killed Amy Dudley?

In this second installation to the series, Dr. Dee is dodging Queen Elizabeth's desire to consult about a propitious wedding date for herself and Robert Dudley following the death of Dudley's wife, Amy. The court is swarming with murder accusations against Robert, finding such a convenient time for his wife to die so that he can marry Queen Elizabeth. Queen Elizabeth can barely disguise her glee, even while garbed in black as she paces the courts.

Dr. Dee is involved in a quest for a powerful crystal scrying stone, belonging to an abbott of a monastery that was torn down during the reign of Elizabeth's father, King Henry VIII. The stone is beyond his financial ability to purchase, but he must find it to fulfill a promise made to the Queen. Robert Dudley, needing an escape from the accusations at Court, becomes embroiled in the plot to find the stone and accompanies Dr. Dee on the journey.

As usual, Rickman gets the details right: the living situation of the famous (but not rich) Dr. Dee, the dark and mysterious spymaster Francis Walsingham lurking in the corners, the rotund and all-knowing Cecil, a young and double-minded Queen Elizabeth, the conflicted and tortured Lord Robert Dudley, the houses, castles, The Thames, and who is in or out of favor at a particular moment of the Elizabethan monarchy.

If you are a fan of all things Tudor, you will not put this novel back down again until you have read it through to the very end. And then you will ask for more! More! More!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent! 8 février 2013

This book, which follows "The Bones of Avalon", is the second in Phil Rickman's series on the life of Dr. John Dee; however, it could be enjoyed without having previously read "The Bones of Avalon". I have read both of them. Phil Rickman's books are always well-written and full of interesting, multi-dimensional characters. I do not usually favor "historical fiction" because it seems distant and unreal to me, but Rickman makes these characters real and natural, allowing the reader to come to know them and empathize with them. Although technology, science, and everyday life have changed since the time of Elizabeth I, Rickman makes me feel that human feelings, desires, and behavior have not changed at all. A great read!

An excellent read - better even than the forerunner, The Bones of Avalon. Dee is a complex and sympathetic character, the Elizabethan world of thought is brought vividly to life and it's an extraordinarily well plotted crime story! I read it twice in quick succession to be sure I had understood all the intricacies of the plot. I always enjoy well thought out hypotheses on historical events about which we will probably never know the truth...

I love Phil Rickman's books, he is my favorite author, and I have read all of his novels. This book's prequel, The Bones of Avalon, was quite a departure from the Merrily Watkins Mysteries that have been the focus of his work for so long, and it was a refreshing change! I thought it was wonderful. Then The Heresy of Dr. Dee comes along and, in my opinion, it is even better! I hope that Mr. Rickman will continue writing about Dr. Dee, but I just ordered The Magus of Hay, so that should keep me happy for a while.
