I have read many books on the subject of human suffering but this one, I believe may stand alone. It is a difficult read, merely because of the picture that develops of human dignity and decency relenting to a form of insanity.
I cannot even begin to imagine the depth of suffering and hoplessness these people indured. In the beginning of this fateful trip, two factors seem to lead the way to destruction. First was a decision to take a 'cut through' or shorter distance to California through a mountain range that was known to have very serious weather in the winter. The second factor was a lack of cooperation and communication within the ranks of the travelers.
You will get a clear picture of the heros and the villians. Every man has within himself the ability to reach greatness as well as the ability to fall into the depths of depravity.
I had to question myself as to how I would have reacted to such horrible conditions as was suffered by the Donner party. This is not a bedtime story but is extremely important, not only as a study into human self preservation but also historically to the settlement of Northern California.
The cover presentation and the format of the book are impeccable.
I highly recommend this book to any audience - an important factual contribution to the history of the wild west.
