I loved this book.

Emma is 9, and a survivor of various traumas... as are the other people drawn to the Hotel, including a fairly obnoxious boy who is a secondary protag.

It's more a YA novel than an adult one... but it's a lot of fun for this adult reader. The plot was twisty, but somewhat straightforward compared to the best adult novels; however, I could not have predicted the ending from the beginning, so it did surprise me.

Also: I tend to read a fair amount of "difficult" topics. I really love having interesting novels that are mostly a break from that.

Summary: this is a YA novel, but one that is fun and arguably profound for adult readers, too.

In many ways I like it better than the bleak Company novels, which to me got more and more depressive as the series continued.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An excellent story for young and old 2 février 2013

Dare I say this? This is my favorite Kage Baker story. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE her Company Series and all the other various and sundry pieces. Ms. Baker was an amazing author. Maybe I read this at a particular point in my life that made it have such an impact, I'm not sure. I loved Monkey Days, too. Maybe I'm just a sucker for growing up themes.

All the other reviewers have hit the nail on the head, so I can't add much more. It's a wonderfully written, easy read. And it has Ms. Baker's "voice"! Some kids' books need illustrations to help the reader see the events. Not this one. Ms. Baker painted pictures with her words.

My nine year old loved it. I loved it. It had outrageously fun characters, a dog, a parrot, a canon, witty conversations, and a worthy ending.

This was probably written for grade-school age, but, as an adult, I really enjoyed it. The story was well told and it was a great group of characters. I indicate that there is No Violence, but there is a scene where someone fires a cannon at them. No one gets hurt, though. This is one of those books, that I will re-read, on a regular basis. I recommend it.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A good speculative fiction book for children 1 novembre 2013

I'm not sure if Amazon tagged this as a juvenile and I missed it or if they failed to make it clear that this is a children's book.

NOT a "young adult" book, a CHILDREN'S BOOK. Like, for kids in grade school. To call this "young adult" would be condescending at best.

However, that's not really the fault of the book or the author, that's the fault of marketing. As a children's book it's very well done.

It seems to me that sometimes books are ill-served by the blurbers who help promote them. The blurbs and reviews on this site are a good example of this. The impression you get is that this is a brilliant fantasy piece, or a deep and complex alternate world piece. That seems to overstate things a bit, which could lead you to be disappointed by a book that has certain but mild and restrained charms.

This is a very well-written, very subtle, very calm, (almost "dreamy"), reflection on youth, self-reliance and friendship. Set in an off-kilter imagined world, it touches more on matters of family and wonder than on adventure or conflict. It is a mellow and thoughtful sort of book; brief and touching.

So, not a slam-bang adventure, but calm and well-written, you might want to consider it as a very good introduction, for a young reader, to, for want of a better word, "literary" fiction.
