From the very first scene of US comedy drama, House of Lies, you get to see a lot of Don Cheadle. That's true of the whole first season, which is almost a one-man show. So, the success of it depends to a very large extent on the likeability of his Marty Kaan and the quality of his performance. Thankfully both hit the mark. Kaan is a management consultant who is ruthless, borderline reckless and, not unusually for a modern show, the keeper of a broken and chaotic home life. But he is very good at what he does and his ego swells with each episode's success. The show has faults -- many of the set-ups are somewhat cliched; the ex-wife who is also a business rival; the wiser-than-his-years troubled kid -- and the secondary characters are a little two-dimensional. As a consequence, the show falls short of its aim of being a biting and cutting-edge satire but, helped by the freedom that comes with being broadcast on pay TV in the US, it attacks its subject with an abandon that makes each 30-minute serving tremendous fun to watch.--Julian Hardy

It's crude, like life. Don't watch it if you can't go there. The heroes (a black man and a white woman) are NOT perfect.
Today's my day off. I'm binging House of Lies and holy crap Season 2 episode 7 is worth the entire series. The way they depict the conflict the main character feels, the scene where he gets stopped by the police for JWB (jogging while black)...
I want to be this good at telling a story.
Related question about the lead: Don Cheadle - great actor, or the greatest actor?
I love this show.
I've worked with management consultancies in real life and can attest to the shadiness of their operations - they are primarily groups of questionably talented but intelligent people looking to drum up work from C-level executives who don't know their own business. The shows starts with such a group, shakes them empty of any sort of moral compass, adds plenty of sex and alcohol and goes from there.
Each episode focuses on a different industry and illustrates a new and complicated way to screw the client over. There are a few overarching plot threads between the characters' personal lives and threats manifesting in their company. The main four characters are perfectly cast though to me it's Don Cheadle's performance of a lifetime. The parts where Cheadle talks directly to the audience help create an immense likability for his character, even though we know we shouldn't.
Needless to say, this isn't a comedy for everyone but personally I enjoyed it so much that I watched the entire season in a weekend. It irreverently skewers nonsense in the business world and highlights the lives of consultants who operates invisibly in large companies, adding no value whatsoever but calving out their paycheck in a horrible perversion of survival of the fittest. For me, it's the best show on TV.
cited for so many awards. The actors (including Academy Award-winner Don Cheadle) are top notch; the scripts are crazy smart; and the elegant settings are to die for. (By the way, Don Cheadle's wardrobe is the best.) Finally, is Kristen Bell the prettiest girl in the world? I loved it all.
