Perennial vegetables are a joy to grow and require a lot less time and effort than annuals. In this book Martin Crawford gives comprehensive advice on all types of perennial vegetable (edible plants that live longer than three years), from ground-cover plants and coppiced trees to plants for bog gardens and edible woodland plants. While the book is very well organized,the selection of the plants presented is not that great. Buying such a book I expected to learn about perennial edible plants I haven't heard of.
First very well known plants like elder or asparagus are included, which gardener does not know about these? Second some plants presented are herb plants like apple mint, not really a vegetable and not uncommon either. Other plants are weeds one will find in forager's handbook.
Most of the plants are edible greens and there are a few tubers, none of them unknown to me.
At least for ramsons, I know it is very difficult to grow from seed. I have tried this twice without success, and the book suggests to simply direct sow in autumn!
Some entries like the edible hostas were quite interesting, however the yield are only the young shoots. Many of the plants don't seem to yield very much for the space and there are no yields given. I miss as well more hints how difficult it would be to cook some of the more fiddly plants.
Out of the two books on perennial vegetables I like the book written by Toensnaier much more, but many entries are for warmer climate and this one is more for the UK.

On the top of it: the binding is miserable, my book falls apart!

There is no one book that can tell you how to grow everything, but this book is such a handy reference guide to start with when learning about perennials. I keep it handy. Crawford introduces it with a long section dealing with polyculture, and unless you are already well familiar with permaculture, you will learn a lot. In the A-Z plant section you will come across maybe a hundred plants of varying edibility; quite a few are easy to grow and very tasty. The author gives a short description of each along with rudimentary growing instructions. He includes zone hardiness information as well. I keep this on my shelf right next to Eric Toensmeir's 'Perennial Vegetables.'

I use this book for building my food forest collection and it is fantastic. A lot of great plants and tons of information on growing and using them. Lots of good pictures and It's very enjoyable to read as well.

Great info...well-balanced between hows, whens, whys, AND whats. Crawford is a dependable source, stewarding the best example of a forest garden in the western world. Perennials are the future!

Perrenial vegetables, what an amazing thing! I think if more people read this book and were sold on the subject then gardening would take a very different direction. Crawford really lays the information out succinctly. It is also a great companion to Creating a Forest Garden. Really great pictures and format too!
