And he will not. Ever

With a bizarre marriage of convenience in place, the lives of both Edie and Stuart seem to unfold as they both wish. Then Stuart, after being severely injured, returns to England. This is trauma all over again for Edie who still suffers from a brutal episode in her past and is terrified of men.

Stuart has no knowledge of Edie's on-going anguish and thinks they will court a little and embark on a normal, pleasant marriage. Edie is panicked and adamantly refuses any such notion.

Then follows gentle wooing by Stuart amid wit and banter between them. He'd lob one; she'd smash it back. When Stuart eventually learns the basis of Edie's fears, his wooing of Edie is no longer simply sweet and gentle. It becomes profoundly moving. (This is where I began seriously hitting the box of tissues and I just don't do that!)

This is an exquisite love story. I am not a weeper. I *never* cry when reading. But this was such a deeply affecting experience I had to dry my eyes a few times.

Ms. Guhrke doesn't hesitate to take on difficult issues and she does it with grace, sensitivity and a deep understanding of the topic at hand. Her The Marriage Bed (Guilty Series) remains one of my favorites.

To see Edie during Stuart's 5-year hiatus, I heartily recommend When The Marquess Met His Match: An American Heiress in London. You will also meet some of the characters appearing in this book.

I don't know how in the world Laura Lee Guhrke can possibly surpass the genius of this novel, but I'm ready! :)

When I ordered this book, I barely remembered who Laura Lee Guhrke was. I knew I had read at least one of her books because the name was familiar. The title of this book didn't impress me at all - I thought it would be one of those light, easily forgotten books that I read for mental oblivion. Wow, was I surprised and impressed.

This was a very well-written story about Stuart, Duke of Margrave, who has inherited vast estates without any funds to properly care for them and Edie, an American heiress, who left America due to a scandal, then traveled to London at her father's behest in order to find a husband. Edie's wealthy father plans to take Edie back to America as soon as the Season ends but she can't stomach the thought of returning and facing the man who ruined her. When she learns that Stuart has spent years in Africa and wants nothing more than to return there and continue his explorations, she is courageous enough to propose a marriage of convenience, whereby he may return to Africa and she will take over the care of his estates. But... he must agree to never come back, the marriage will not be consummated and everyone will live happily ever after. Yes, indeed.

This arrangement suits both parties for five long years until Stuart is injured and nearly dies in the bush of Africa. During which time, Stuart has an epiphany and literally feels the "call" so to speak to go home and take up his life with Edie. When he returns home, Edie's enjoyable, comfortable, safe life is totally unsettled. Although she is a strong person in nearly every way, she is emotionally terrified when she realizes Stuart wants to have a real marriage but very reluctantly agrees to give him ten days to change her mind. If, after the ten day period is up, she hasn't willingly kissed him, he will not continue to press her towards a real marriage.

As portrayed by Ms. Guhrke, Stuart will forever be one of the standout heroes in this genre - at least in my mind. He is patient, kind, determined to have Edie accept him as a real husband in every way. The ten days become a real test for Stuart who must find a way to get past the strong defenses Edie has put in place due to her hurtful past. Stuart begins to re-train Edie much as one would attempt to gentle a horse who was improperly broken. Indeed, Edie may have been wounded but she has retained her warm heart. Under Stuart's gentle tutelage, her wounded soul begins to heal. I was a little dumbfounded by what I found between these pages. A warm, gentle, lovely romance.

*One Spoiler* I think it's possible that there is one section that may cause Ms. Guhrke difficulties with some readers. When Edie questioned Stuart about whether or not he had other women during the five years they were apart, he responded that when things got desperate, he would travel to Paris. Hello? He would travel to Paris from Kenya when he got desperate for sex - "because it was easier - it was easier to get condoms and the Paris women... well, it was just easier..." Um.. that would have been around 4,000 miles from Nairobi to Paris "as the crow flies" - desperate indeed.

I really looked forward to this book - I thought Guhrke’s “When the Marquess Met his Match” was an outstanding novel. However, I wasn’t completely enamored of this one.

In a nutshell, Edie and Stuart married 5 years ago for reasons other than love, with the understanding that he would move on and leave her to live her life as she wanted. That seemed to suit them at the time, but now Stuart returns, having recovered from a serious physical injury, and wants to start a family. Edie wants none of it, as that was not what she (or they) signed on for. She also carries with her some very serious traumatic history that prevents her from forming any intimate relationships. Stuart is, of course, clueless as to her history, but assumes her heart was once broken. Eventually they agree to a compromise in the form of a “bet” that he will make her want him in 10 days, or he’ll leave. Stuart begins a campaign meant to entice Edie via her sensual self. Stuart is hard pressed to break their original agreement and have it his way - because he wants children, not because he has fallen in love with his wife. Step one of my disappointment.

I was very torn between the heavy-handed seduction theme and Stuart’s eventual efforts to help Edie to feel a sense of control. He’s quite manipulative and makes no bones about it, which contradicted with the theme of Edie’s evolution to regain a sense of trust and control over her life. It seemed far more focused on the seduction and less so on the development of a relationship. Step two in my disappointment for what would have made this an outstanding book.

So for that reason, I didn’t think the theme was as well played out as it could be. The writing is beautiful, the dialogue is top rate, the sensuality meter went off the scale, and Stuart turns out to be a really swell guy. It is certainly very steamy without the sweat. No doubt the book also touches on some very serious issues. But I wish there had been a bit less manipulation and more self discovery on Edie’s part with a stronger focus on the development of forging a trusting relationship between the H and h. There was a small part of me that thought Edie was again being manipulated in this relationship as she had been in her past, but it just came in a different package.

Perhaps I am being too hard, but it’s just my opinion. I do think it is well worth reading. This is a very good author, and I will continue to looking forward to reading her books.

"Her marriage was perfect"

THE STORY: The Duke and Duchess of Margrave have a marriage of convenience. They agreed that Edie, and American heiress, would contribute her immense dowry, get the title, and take over running the ducal estates and that Stuart would go to Africa and never come back. Five years later, Stuart is nearly killed by a lion and realizes that he wants to try and build a real marriage with his wife. He returns to England and his wife is appalled. She has no intention of being close to any man, including her husband. Stuart offers Edie a deal, if she gives him ten days to try and win a kiss from her, he will agree to a legal separation if he fails.

OPINION: This book is a powerful story about pain and loss and recovery from deep wounds of all kinds. The way that Edie's personal story is compared and contrasted with Stuart's was especially illuminating. This book focuses especially on the power of love to heal, but there is also the power of choice and respect and trust. I was especially moved by Stuart's reaction to Edie's history and his determination to show her respect and earn her trust. I thought the story moved in ways that were unexpected and I came to really like the characters of Stuart and Edie. My only complaint was that their happy ending was cut a bit short. I would have liked more -- maybe in subsequent book in the series.

WORTH MENTIONING: Readers should be aware that this book has depictions of rape and its aftermath.

FINAL DECISION: Although married, this book is really how Stuart and Edie get to know one another and fall in love. I thought the story was well developed and I would recommend it.

CONNECTED BOOKS: This is the second book in the An American Heiress in Lond series. It can be read as a standalone without missing anything.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4.25 stars.

This was a pleasant surprise. From the title and cover I expected a run of the mill historical romance. That turned out to be an inaccurate assumption. I don't want to give the story away, but the situation the heroine is dealing with in this book is often portrayed as foreplay activity in some romance books. The heroine was the victim in a traumatic event several years ago that resulted in her choosing to avoid traditional marriage.

I felt that the main characters' thoughts and feelings were realistic given their histories. The story's secondary characters were much more stereotypically portrayed.

This is not a grim book at all,but it is a very heartwarming one.
