With the use of core concepts and the integration of extensive references, this book provides students and professionals alike with the most in-depth view of the current state of the science and its relevance across disciplines."--ANTICANCER RESEARCH 33: 745-746 (2013), February 2013 ". . . a beautifully written and insightful genetics book that hits all the right notes. Major principles are illustrated in the context of real disease, both Mendelian and complex, which keeps the relevance high."--Michael J. Dougherty, PhD, Director of Education, American Society of Human Genetics "This thoughtful and scholarly book, teaching about common traits and rare inherited disorders, is beautifully written and accessible to science students and non-science students alike."--Margretta Seashore, MD, Director, Genetic Consultation Service and Director, Biochemical Disease Detection Laboratory, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Yale University School of Medicine "A master story teller and one of the founders of the field, Rosenberg tells the story of human genetics as few others can – anchored in history but with a fresh eye towards what the study of the human genome teaches us about genes and their importance for both biology and medicine."--Huntington F. Présentation de l'éditeur

In the nearly 60 years since Watson and Crick proposed the double helical structure of DNA, the molecule of heredity, waves of discoveries have made genetics the most thrilling field in the sciences.  The study of genes and genomics today explores all aspects of the life with relevance in the lab, in the doctor’s office, in the courtroom and even in social relationships.   In this helpful guidebook, one of the most respected and accomplished human geneticists of our time communicates the importance of genes and genomics studies in all aspects of life.  With the use of core concepts and the integration of extensive references, this book provides students and professionals alike with the most in-depth view of the current state of the science and  its relevance across disciplines.
  • Bridges the gap between basic human genetic understanding and one of the most promising avenues for advances in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of human disease.
  • Includes the latest information on diagnostic testing, population screening, predicting disease susceptibility, pharmacogenomics and more
  • Explores ethical, legal, regulatory and economic aspects of genomics in medicine.
  • Integrates historical (classical) genetics approach with the latest discoveries in structural and functional genomics

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Wonderful Molecular Biology Textbook 10 septembre 2012
Par Sarah - Publié sur Amazon.com

Rosenberg's text was by far one of the best core textbooks I've used in a molecular biology class. The book's information is presented in such a way that a varied range of readers--from those who know very little about molecular biology and genetics to those who know quite a bit--can comprehend it. The book emphasizes that as the study of genetics rapidly changes, scientists and non-scientists alike must become knowledgeable in order to be well informed about health care and health care policies. I would not only recommend this text to professors and students but also to any individual interested in learning about the exceptional advances of genetics over the past 30 or so years.

Reading this book was a pleasure. It is personally engaging, thoughtfully organized, and beautifully written. I began with only rudimentary knowledge of genetics, but now have a much more systematic understanding of basic principles, the history and current challenges in this rapidly expanding field, and its significance for human society. The Review Questions at the end of each chapter are very helpful for checking one's readiness to go to the next chapter, and the answers at the end of the book provide concise explanations of concepts.

This textbook provides an excellent introduction to genetics, as well as a clear and unbiased overview of the current developments and future of the field. Well-written and thoughtfully designed, this book skillfully explains basic scientific principles while simultaneously indicating their relevance in our lives, detailing the present and potential consequences of this field on society. Diagrams, reviews, and practice questions at the end of each chapter aid in study techniques for students.

A must-have for anyone looking to strengthen their understanding of genetics, and knowledgeably develop their opinions about some of today's most controversial topics!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Genes that Fit 22 juillet 2012

As an Undergraduate non-major, this book was an excellent introduction to the world of science, biology and genetics. The whole field of genetics is so important today but I felt like I never really understood it and now I have a much greater understanding of how genetics, health and society all fit together. I'm even considering taking more science courses now, something I wouldn't have even thought of before reading this book!
