Présentation de l'éditeur

Book 3 of the Scarlett Bernard series

Actions have consequences—a lesson Scarlett Bernard is learning the hard way. As a “null,” Scarlett has always been able to negate the powers of the supernatural beings that surround her. But now her reckless decision to permanently change Eli from a werewolf to a human has left the Los Angeles werewolf pack in shambles, and upset the balance of power among the city’s supernatural factions. To make matters worse, Scarlett’s employers discover that a newly changed werewolf is running amok in the city. To catch the rogue werewolf, Scarlett will need help from both Eli and Detective Jesse Cruz of the LAPD…a situation that will force her to finally choose between them.

However, Scarlett and her friends aren’t the only ones on the hunt—someone else is chasing the wolf. Someone with no reservations about collateral damage. Now Scarlett and her allies must stop both the rogue wolf and the deadly hunter before the full moon rises and all hell breaks loose.

Filled with the same suspense and wit readers loved in Dead Spots and Trail of Dead, this may be Scarlett Bernard’s most harrowing adventure yet…

A good series, and one that's starting to develop in unexpected ways. I almost gave up in the middle of this novel when people just kept expecting the injured Scarlett to keep taking care of their messes. Since her teens Scarlett has been cleaning up after supernaturals in Los Angeles and now they seem to expect her to solve bigger problems as well. In this book she is nursing a badly damaged knee while trying to track down a wolf who is killing women. Some of the wolves also begin hounding and threatening her because there are rumors of a cure for their condition and they think she has it.

I became increasingly irate as people who Scarlett was working hard to protect treat her poorly. When the handsome detective who has been recruited to assist the supernaturals unloads on Scarlett and leaves her at a crime scene I had had enough. I actually had to read ahead to find out just how much of a doormat this woman was going to allow herself to be. I don't wish to put out spoilers but suffice it to say this allowed me to finish the book. One reason I read fantasy novels is because I enjoy strong smart female characters.

Let's hear it for the doctor who reminds Scarlett of her value.

**spoiler alert**

This is book 3 in the “Scarlett Bernard” series, and unfortunately I didn’t think it was as great as book 2, “Trail of Dead.” First off I have to say that I love Scarlett. No matter what she goes thru or what’s thrown her way, she always stays strong staying true to herself.

The story picks up one week after Scarlett’s confrontation with her former mentor, Olivia, which left her with a twisted knee and torn ligament. I felt really bad for Scarlett. She’s in so much physical pain and needs to be resting, but it was like no one cared or that they forgot she’s a null, a person who doesn’t heal quickly like that of a werewolf or vampire. There were times I was expecting Scarlett to break down, because if anyone has the right to have a meltdown it’s Scarlett. Olivia betrayed her, she came close to death several times, and even though she needs to rest, she’s still expected to do her job as a “cleaner.” I have to say I did not care for Jesse at all this round. I thought he was an arrogant judgmental *ss. Jesse tells Scarlett he loves her. Really? Instead of helping Scarlett with a job, he leaves her to do the job all on her own. Yeah, that’s love for you. Cue eye-roll. Even though he’s come to terms with the fact that other worldly beings are living amongst humans, he still sees everything in black and white. If that’s not bad enough, Jesse is forever judging Scarlett about the work she does. Talk about a hypocrite. When he learned that Dash could make it possible for him to be transferred to Homicide Special, a dream of Jesse’s, if he helped them in return, Jesse accepted. He made the decision alone. No one forced him. Yeah, what a saint. On top of which he’s taking out all his anger on everyone else, in particular Scarlett, instead of directing it towards the one he’s really angry at - himself.

As mentioned earlier, it’s out of left field when Jesse tells Scarlett he “loves” her. They may really like each other and shared a couple of kisses, but honestly I felt no chemistry or sizzle between the two. So what does Scarlett tell him? Yep, you guessed it. She “loves” him too. Really? I’d like to know why? And hello?? She just slept with Eli. Speaking of Eli, it’s too bad he only makes a couple of appearances this round especially since he’s loved Scarlett since day one. You can tell how much Eli loves and cares for her. In fact, Eli takes better care of Scarlett than Jesse who’s supposedly so in love with her.

The two main head honchos are Will (werewolf) and Dash (vampire) and they’ve made their appearances sporadically throughout the series. I find it surprising that the author doesn’t utilize them more as they’re both crucial to the story. They have such a hold on Scarlett. When summoned, she drops whatever she’s doing and goes to them. Hell, whenever she’s in Dash’s presence she’s shaking in her boots. She basically works for them. I say giving them a bigger role would most definitely add more appeal and drama to the series.

I found “Hunter’s Trail” to move at a slow pace. I thought it was bogged down with a lot of mumbo jumbo about werewolves, vampires, and witches, etc. C’est la vie.

So far I have no plans to stop reading the series. I just hope the next one is a better read.

Well where to start, Scarlett spends the whole book limping around with a busted knee. I guess there is no way to "heal" somebody magically if you are a null.

Her love life pretty much stays in shambles but it looks like possibly it might settle out at books end but I have been wrong before about such things.

The whole book revolves around a rogue wolf that is killing women and appears to be trying to start a new pack. Throw in some serious werewolf killers from France and you have a horrible mixture for Scarlett to deal with and on top of all of this she has some serious life changes coming.

It is a stressful and seemingly impossible situation but Scarlett seems to always find a way so we will assume she won't die but she seems to get banged up a lot more than most of our heroines.

Bottom line: Great story, original plots and characters, throw in a bit of revenge and more angst than I care for but it gets buried by the exceptional story. 5 Stars and highly recommended. The fact that you can get the whole series FREE with KindleUnlimited just made this whole thing a steal

I enjoyed the first two books in the series, although I did not think that the alternating POVs of Scarlett and Jesse worked very well. However, the plots were interesting and the characters were developing well. This third book, however, just fell apart. The plot was weak and even ludicrous at times, and the questionable romance between Scarlett and Jesse just never awoke any interest. For one thing, Jesse's character alternates between irritating and just plain bland. There is absolutely no chemical attraction that comes through, and all he seems to do throughout the book is whine or criticize Scarlett. I hope he goes away and does not come back - but if he does come back, PLEASE do away with his POV. It's uninteresting, boring and does nothing to move the story line along.

Eli is better, but again, not much in the way of sexual chemistry with Scarlett (partly because he didn't make much of an appearance). Scarlett herself, while likeable, can't seem to get past her passive/aggressive nature. I'd love for her to come into her own and start showing some strengths - this book seemed mostly to focus on her weaknesses.

If there is another book in the series, I'll give it one more try - but it will have to really get past the weaknesses of this book to keep me going.

**My review contains spoilers if you have not read Trail of the Dead**

I've been looking forward to Hunter's Trail since Olson left us with that massive cliffy at the end of Trail of the Dead.

Hunter's Trail begins with Scarlett dealing with the repercussions from "curing" Eli. From the toll it took on her body to the werewolf pack losing their beta to the leaders trying to keep her newfound abilities a secret from the rest of the Old World.

With a majority of the pack not knowing what's happened to Eli, rumors and speculation are causing disorder and one giant headache for Will, the pack alpha.

When female victims, obvious werewolf victims, begin turning up on Will's doorstep, he enlists Scarlett and Jesse to help solve the case.

I just love this series. Olson's writing pulls me in. Scarlett is a fantastic heroine. She's funny and compassionate. I especially love how she stood up for herself and her worth to Dashiell.

Also, if you have shied away from this series because you've heard there's a love triangle, don't let that stop you. It's not the typical "heroine is wishy washy and annoying over two guys" kind of love triangle. It's grown up. You'll know who Scarlett chooses by the end of this book and it'll make sense. You'll be happy but it's not like the other guy will be out of her life.

Once again well done! I'm looking forward to more.
