Présentation de l'éditeur

"Relentlessly entertaining." -- New York Daily News

A Jetliner Crashes in the Everglades.
A Billion-Dollar Lawsuit: Negligence or Terrorism?
The Defense: Kill Anyone, Even a Supreme Court Justice, to Win the Case.

Supreme Court Justice Sam Truitt takes the bench with high ideals, lofty intentions...and a troubled marriage. Lisa Fremont, his stunning and brilliant law clerk, has a dark secret in her past. If Lisa doesn't get Truitt's vote in multi-million dollar case involving a catastrophic airplane crash, she'll be killed. IMPACT is a tale of seduction and betrayal, of passion and greed. Truitt, who has always followed the rules, and Lisa, who never has, join together to battle those who live by no law at all.

IMPACT, published in hardcover as 9 SCORPIONS, was the inspiration for First Monday, the television drama starring James Garner and Joe Mantegna, co-created by Paul Levine and Donald P. Bellisario.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Very entertaining legal thriller and commentary about how our justice system works (well, perhaps not always…) 13 novembre 2016

Following a jetliner crash in the Everglades that kills all on board, law suits are filed and then dismissed for lack of evidence regarding airliner negligence. An appeal goes to the US Supreme Court where a new justice has just arrived who could be the tie-breaking fifth vote to allow the case to go forward… or not. His newly-hired clerk has been “placed” by the airline to convince him to reject the case, or she will be killed. Or perhaps the new justice will be killed. And so the story builds, very tightly woven and increasingly thrilling.

Within the drama of the story itself Levine presents his observations and commentary on the tension between Justice and the Law, which frequently are at odds. In front of the US Supreme Court Building are two statues: “The Contemplation of Justice”, and “The Authority of Law”, placed on opposite sides of the steps leading up to the building; and on the building’s façade the phrase “Equal Justice Under Law”. In this and other excellent books by Paul Wilson, attorneys (and here, a Supreme Court Justice) are faced with the dilemma of how to honor the “Equal Justice Under Law” in situations when the Law and Justice are in direct conflict with one another and are mutually exclusive.

Other equally entertaining legal thrillers by Paul Levine include the Lassiter series, the Solomon and Lord series, and several free-standing novels one of which is Impact. His protagonist lawyers are not heroic, are irreverent mavericks hanging on by a thread, and are humorous. They all face the Law v. Justice Dilemma, and act according to their interesting choices.

These books are all excellent reads and highly recommended for those who appreciate well-crafted legal thrillers.

Well written story with plenty of twists. Who is to know what is the right thing to do? I think this is the best of Paul Levine. He takes an event from the headlines and gives us the back story. The outcome is neither predictable or a given.
The Solomon vs. Lord series was like a popcorn read, entertaining. IMPACT is on a much higher level.

This was the first book I had read by Paul Levine. I was pleasantly surprised and impressed. His writing pulls you step by step throughout the book and it's hard to put the book down.

The air crash was frightening as it was described and one could feel the terror of the pilots and the crew.
Sam Truitt, Supreme Court Judge, and Lisa Freemont, the judge's law clerk, although on opposite sides at first, work together for the greater good. The story of the life of the main maintenance man is sad and tragic.

The thrilling ride through the swamps of Florida and the characters involved are fasinating.

I definitely will read a lot more of Paul Levine's books.

First, I like Paul Levine and have read all of his novels. This novel was, however, a disappointment. There was not a character in the book to pull for because every character was without character, immoral, and continuously made predictably bad decisions. By the end of the book, I was simply ready for things to miraculously resolve themselves, which they did. I wholeheartedly recommend all of Levine's other novels with the exception this novel and Pay Dirt which is again a cast of immoral characters making unbelievably stupid decisions.

I selected this book because of the synopsis. I made a good decision. Mr. Levine carefully plots the balance of the characters and uses his knowledge of the legalese terms applied to the story. If I were to have a negative comment it would have to be the lack of any strength in the Max character to effect any positive action again the main nemesis - Shank.
