I agree witht the other readers who thought that it was not as good as the other books by Goddard. The story is not only boring, but the the plot is very thin and the characters unusually unpleasant and wicked. If the book were a person it would drag its feet. This is exactly what I felt when I was reading it, I was just going through the motions and couldn't believe that the author of Past Caring and Into the blue had written something that was so blantantly not up to his standards.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, from beginning to end. I can understand why another reviewer found the book boring : there are no car chases or gun-fights. Just exquisite characterisations, scene descriptions, dialogue and suspense. And a twist at the end that was well worth waiting for. Not a book for comic lovers but a treasure for those looking for a perfectly crafted work that one can read again and again and each time find more pearls of writing. Thoroughly recommended.
