HASH(0x87e44a98) étoiles sur 5 The Inconvenient Corpse by Jackie King 18 juillet 2011

I purchased this book because I liked the idea of a bed and breakfast murder with eccentric characters and 14 out of the 15 reviewers gave 5 stars. Unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations. I have to wonder if something fishy is going on with the reviews, because this wasn't a 5 star book. I don't like giving bad reviews and it wasn't completely horrible, but I almost didn't finish it. Instead of being lovably quirky, some of the characters just came off as weird. For instance, a guy who lived in the basement was writing a book and he would pin his notes to his clothes so he wouldn't lose them. And parts of the story seemed unnecessary, like the situation with Grace's husband and all the guests having a connection to the same company. I'm sorry, but I can't recommend this book to anyone.

I read this book as soon as it came out and, now that I have a Kindle am thrilled to see it available in that format, too. I blogged back when I first read it about how much I enjoyed Grace and watching her grow from a woman whose life had turned upside down. I liked Sam and her relationship with him, and am really looking forward to seeing how that progresses in future books. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

HASH(0x87e44f24) étoiles sur 5 Cheating husbands, dead naked men and dead housekeepers set the stage for hilarity. 26 juillet 2014

Grace Cassidy was a 49 year old native 'Okie' who had packed a bag and took off after finding out her husband had a girlfriend (his secretary). She traveled until she came to Port Ortega and she asked for a room at a Bed & Breakfast. She didn't care where she slept. She was tired and simply wanted to think. After taking a long walk on the beach, she returned to her room to discover a dead man in her bed...naked. She became the main suspect. Sargeant Harper wanted to know what she did with the dead man's clothes and who the dead man was.
While trying to call her husband, she found out that her husband had skipped taking all her money, the money from their business, and their clients' monies and transferring them to a Cayman Island account. He was a thief and he left her with nothing.
Finding out that the check she wrote for her stay at the Inn had bounced, she lucked up upon the Inn owner needing a fill in to manage the Inn while she took a trip to Hawaii. That woman left her husband behind. Grace applied for the position so she could stay and have a roof over her head.
Unusual as it seems, the maid was found dead in her new room. Laying on her bed, in her dress. Can anything else possibly go wrong in Grace's life.
I enjoyed this story immensely. Not only for the wide variety of characters, but their quirky, and often times, hilarious natures. I laughed frequently through this murder mystery and I am very glad I got to read it. A humorous who done it that will keep you guessing until the last page.

HASH(0x87e470e4) étoiles sur 5 3.5 stars for a fun read 23 avril 2011

I feel bad about rounding the rating down to 3 stars and may round it up; we will see. It's definitely a 3.5 star rating from me though.

I really enjoyed the book. It was not the challenging mystery to me that the other reviewers say but it wasn't painfully obvious either. I figured out several things quite early on based on the information but I didn't understand the motives 'til the end, which did leave some room for self-doubt. I like that the clues were given and there weren't any deliberately misleading clues - I hate when 'mystery' writers can't leave you guessing without hiding the clues. Thanksfully this author didn't do that.

What I enjoyed is that the characters were likeable - so fun, quirky and colourful. And though she was did some really dumb things, Grace was believable as an ordinary, naive (formerly) well-off lady who is not a professional sleuth, and her mistakes were understandable if frustrating. Fortunately, when she does really stupid things (what on earth was she thinking buying that clue and hiding it in the fridge?!), even she realizes (seconds too late) that her impulsive reaction was wrong and you can be sympathetic when she compounds her error. I don't really understand why she kept some secrets that she did or suspected some characters so strongly without evidence or with weak evidence while covering up for others, but then, as I said, she's no pro.

Grace is the sort of person who, if she spotted a child pulling on the cord of a boiling electric kettle, would respond by trying to grab the kettle instead of the child. Yet that is way better than just screaming in horror. What I liked is that, except near the end where she was supposedly seen as an 'intuitive' (impulsive is more like it), what we learn about her shows her to be silly and naive (Miss Marple she is not. More Inspector Clouseau without the physical comedy, she sort of stumbles in (almost) the right direction.)

It is amazing how many laws were broken that the investigating officer simply dismissed or turned a blind eye to. I don't know California small towns but Port Ortega seems more suited some other state. I guess I am stereotyping but that kind of small-town feel just didn't feel very California-ish to me. (BTW, there was a peculiar very British phrase in the book - it was 'quarter of the hour' instead of 'quarter to the hour'. Do Americans say 'quarter of' too?)

Mostly I hesitate to round up to 4 because of the above and because of the cheesy, far too perfect ending to almost everyone's story. The entire storyline with her son also seemed unnecessary to me. I didn't think of a sequel til I read the other reviews (the story doesn't end with a cliffhanger) but I guess one of Grace's main storylines is unresolved... I will definitely consider the sequel (and my guess is that this is where her son's storyline with become useful). I say 'consider' only because the book ends with a blossoming new romance for Grace and, while I don't grudge the leading characters some romance, I hate when it takes over a mystery. Fortunately, the romance aspect is very light (almost not there) in this book.

In spite of my 3 stars, this book was more than just 'okay', I truly liked it; but I just don't think it was 4 star quality.

What a great read! It held my interest from page 1 and never let me go! The characters were interesting and the deeper into the story, the more hooked I was. I especially loved that I couldn't figure it out until the very end. Looking forward to having Grace solve many more mysteries with me!
