Though there are lot of the documents, blog and websites available to learn and master chef, I some times felt all this online sources missed somethings. This book filled those missing parts in the book. The author has written a well directed examples which one can try. I personally tried lot of examples and yes, its works brilliantly. Its better to learn bit and bytes of ruby before you start with this book. The book drives the readers from basic to basic concepts to the most advanced concepts. I suggest readers to try out the examples given in the book, so that same can have hands on experience.

I really prefer this book, its lot lot better deal to invest if some one is welling to learn, instead of spending and investing lot of time to learn chef from online sources.

Worth every penny!!!

Congratulations to the Matthias Marschall, great job!!!!

I worked for about a year with Chef and got to learn about it from here and there and this book managed to glue all the information together. It starts with the most basic information about how the basic configurations and tools and goes in-depth really smoothly.

Loved the fact that has a lot of references to tools and information about how to use chef, like foodcritic, berkshelf, vagrant and goes really nice with the opscode official documentation.

Good read for any one that want`s to start and get more extensive information about Configuration Management with Chef. I`m using it today as a first go-to documentation page.

I thought I would learn some chef using this book but so far very frustrating for the beginners. Couldn't install chef following the instructions in this book. Definitely not for the beginners. Every other reviewers said the same thing. And I know it by now. I followed opscode website and that helped. I was expecting ready made recipes and really disappointed. If you want to learn chef then don't buy this book at all.

I would recommend starting with [...] to get familiar with chef basic since this is not really a beginner's guide. Having read a lot about chef and done some hands on, this book is quickly becoming an essential tool. The author has done a great job of picking up a number of best practices and boiling this down into simple explainable steps.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Enjoyable read, but already outdated 26 juin 2014

The fundamentals in this book are quite solid, and the book went over a variety of ways of doing several things you might expect to see in a real enterprise. I also appreciate the way the author details development practices and interacting with version control.

The only bad news is that "best practices" with Chef have evolved since this book's writing and by itself, this book is insufficient for deploying chef.
