I love Robert Johnson's work
le 3 juin 2016 - Publié sur Amazon.com
I love Robert Johnson's work. He is a serious Jungian scholar who has a gift for expressing Jung's work in a clear and practical way. It's upsetting that other reviewers here call his work "pop psychology" just because it is written simply. That said, this book was disappointing because its title is deceiving. It doesn't clearly explain the Jungian view of psychological projection in full. It DOES explain, at least in its first section, a little discussed aspect of projection that's important to understand: the projection of one's positive qualities onto role models, gurus, religious figures, teachers, etc. In the first section of this book, Johnson explains why we project in this way: because we cannot yet fully accept or bear the numinous, God-like qualities of our own inner nature (for example compassion, love, integrity, creativity, worth, etc.) For that alone, the first section is extremely worthwhile and should be a must-read for anyone in any kind of group run by a charismatic leader (gurus, psychological, spiritual and self-help teachers, political and social activist groups, religious figures past and present, etc.) The book explains the positive function of projecting your positive qualities onto a role model or charismatic leader with Johnson's usual clarity and depth. Sadly, it does not present a balanced view of the topic, as it almost totally ignores the down side of this particular type of projection, which I believe is part of the psychological mechanism that allows charismatic leaders like Hitler to come into power. This very slim volume is not as thoughtful, well organized, practical, comprehensive or balanced as Johnson's other writings, which is why I rated it two stars, but chapter one deserves 5 stars plus for its unique contributions.

Looking at Projections in a Positive Way
le 3 février 2010 - Publié sur Amazon.com
This book is for the person who is looking for a positive understanding of projections, not for the person who is looking for pathology. It is easy to understand and has a premise that makes a lot of sense. It helped me to gain an understanding of how projections work and how they can teach you a lot about yourself and your own "inner gold". In looking at my past projections, I realized that the good qualities I was projecting on someone else were, in reality, my own inner traits. It is similar to the "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear". Too much is written about projections that deals with the negative consequences of projections and the pathology of the person doing the projecting. Excellent book.

I have read criticisms of this book that it is very short and doesn't say very much.....I think it's one of the most profound books that I have ever read. Probaby it is the shortes - 4 chapters - but I can't think of any other book that has left me with a smile on the face when I have finished it, rather than wanting to read more. If you find it unsatisfying or short, then it's not the right moment or not the right book for you. At the right moment, this book is profound and will help you recognise your gold and help you value it and protect it.

Great new presentation on projection
le 15 octobre 2010 - Publié sur Amazon.com
Robert A. Johnson's Inner Gold is a typical (for Johnson) simple presentation on this very universal psychological practice. It is refreshing to find a new language to use--describing the projection process as placing one's inner gold onto others rather than claiming these treasures and placing them where they belong--within. I will be reading it many times to absorb all its wisdom.
Inner Gold: Understanding Psychological Projection

Author Robert A. Johnson, a Jungian therapist, masterfully helps you to grasp the significance of psychological projection. And in its ability to raise your awareness of your use of projection, there is a wonderful desire that will swell within as you seek to diminish the harmful aspects of projection on a daily basis. I used this slim but potent text with a men's group that met once a month. Success came nearly effortlessly. Go for it!
