Présentation de l'éditeur

In Detail

Nowadays, there is a computer in almost any device that you can imagine. These low power,task-specific machines are programmed usually to execute very specific tasks. The most common way to build this software is using Linux, but some fine-tuning is needed to fit your specifications in such restrained machines. This is where Buildroot really comes into its ownas a great tool to generate and configure a Linux system, as it allows you to tune your system in every way to be small, fast, efficient, and safe.

Instant Buildroot is a practical, hands-on guide that provides you with a number of clear, step-by-step recipes which will help you to build your own custom embedded system that meets all of your requirements in terms of size, speed, and software functionality.

Instant Buildroot uses practical examples and step-by-step recipes to help you generate, configure, and deploy a Linux system in any target machine. This book will get you started with generating your system depending on your target hardware and will help you compile and configure the right bootloader options that fit your requirements. You will also learn how to add support to your board peripherals using Linux modules and finally how to install common software packages like QT GUI or a light web server.

Filled with practical, step-by-step instructions and clear explanations for the most important and useful tasks. A concise guide full of step-by-step recipes to help you learn how to generate and configure an embedded Linux system using Buildroot.

Who this book is for

Instant Buildroot is for developers who want to know how to use Buildroot tools to generate and configure their own embedded system. It is assumed that the reader has some experience with Linux and basic programming and is familiar with basic hardware development boards.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 it's like a child's reading exercise to find all the relevant ... 17 novembre 2015

I started reading 'Instant Buildroot' from my Safari online account with much excitement. This is the book that would take me from vaguely familiar to competent Buildroot user. Not so. The first section in the first chapter 'Generating a basic root filesystem' apparently hasn't been proofread, nor tested on a naive reader. I failed to get a root file system that would even complete a boot, and after too many hours I redirected my efforts to online tutorials.

The chapter walks the reader through a recipe of configuration for Raspberry pi using Buildroot, with some supporting scripts, and configuration files. However there are several important errors; outdated bash shell scripting conventions (was it 'xxx' or `xxx` when it could have been $(xxxx)); scripts fail because expected files are missing; statements missing the bash 'value of' symbol ($). Some are more obvious that others, but taken together this recipe doesn't work.

To the degree that I read the book before I gave up, it's more of a brain dump than a coherent strategy to get your project working. Even past the issues I was able to troubleshoot, there seems to be some important missing steps, or possibly I didn't recognize some obvious errors. Either way the book is not informative enough to distinguish between the two. The format of the instructions are rambling, it's like a child's reading exercise to find all the relevant parts in a story with no organization.

I spent lots of hours diligently trying to get a bootable image, but although it starts to boot, it always panics. I tried everything I could find on the Internet to augment the book for the issues I could identify, plus some experimentation and guesswork. I'm certain there are others with more experience in just this area but the point of the book is to get me from here to there. I won't succeed with this book until I get all the information I need elsewhere and then why do I need the book.

For some context on my background, I have only Linux workstations at home (no Windows), and develop Linux software at work. There are definitely holes in my Linux configuration and boot skills set which is why I started reading the book, but I'm fluent in many things Linux. In fact it's my experience that allowed me to troubleshoot some of the issues I found, but I was unable to fill in all the gaps, some of which are very subtle.

I've given up on this book, and I've started down the path of finding online Buildroot tutorials.

It's not too bad, though there are errors. I bought it mainly to support the effort.
