5.0 étoiles sur 5 An All Encompassing Reference 16 février 2011

This Encyclopedia envisaged getting contributions from over 600 people coming from over 100 countries where English is not the native language in most of them. Many nations with differing cultures, religions, languages and ways of life have conflicts among themselves. To meld all these contributions to an acceptable level of coherence will be a daunting task even for the stouthearted. I wondered whether anyone had the fortitude to attempt to wade through the labyrinths of the Tower of Babel to come out with a reference book of this magnitude.

This Encyclopedia covers the entire gamut of Statistics and Probability contributed by 619 authors from 105 countries of the world, which includes several Nobel Laureates and eminent statisticians. It contains not only the basics of Statistics and Probability but also very advanced concepts with a variety of applications. It offers comprehensive and highly accessible information on probability and statistical terms, methods and applications. It consists of 1852 pages in three volumes and could easily be considered as the Bible of Statistics and Probability.

I really admired the single-minded devotion of Prof. Lovric to this project. What is extremely noteworthy is that he has personally convinced the authors from the different warring nations of our world to come together to contribute to this Encyclopedia. The tireless efforts and the personal eloquence of Prof Lovric has fructified into this magnificent work, which has clearly demonstrated that peoples from all parts of the world can come together peacefully for a common cause. This project is a testimony that all peoples of the conflicting nations of the world can come together for a common effort, which can promote peace. The making of this Encyclopedia by far transcends the conflicts among nations and permeates into the Global effort of bringing together all nations into the unifying force - knowledge. Prof. Lovric has admirably succeeded in this noble effort.

The price may be steep for any single person to own, but every library and institution can be greatly benefited by having a copy of this book. Prof. Lovric should be congratulated for spawning this idea and working diligently for its completion. Springer also deserves congratulations for this superbly produced book.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The finest and best priced statistics encyclopedia available 4 mars 2011

As was another reviewer, I am also an insider, having authored three articles in Miodrag Lovric's "International Encyclopedia of Statistical Science". Contributors to the Encyclopedia get no financial reward for their efforts, so my positive comments have no conflict of interest.

When Miodrag contacted me about contributing to the Encyclopedia, I was at first concerned that it would be like other Encyclopedia's of statistics -- generally well-written articles but either having too many, or too few categories. Moreover, the costs of these encyclopedia are generally very high, and as a consequence comparatively few researchers are able to have access to them. In our economy few libraries can afford them, much less academic departments, businesses, or individuals.

I have written articles in several of these other encyclopedias, and was not anxious to spend the time and effort preparing another article. But after communicating with Dr Lovric and learning of his plans for the encyclopedia, of his goals for keeping the cost down as reasonable as possible, and for making it available to a wide global readership, I felt that contributing to it would be well worth the effort. His excitement about the project was truly infectious. And importantly, the publisher, Springer, shared in Lovric's goals for the encyclopedia. The manner in which the text is displayed is superb, as are the graphics, binding, and general appearance.

The result is a three volume work of 1673 pages, consisting of a host of articles authored by many leading statisticians from around the world. Articles are written for the benefit of researchers from every discipline -- not to only professional statisticians. In addition, articles are available for most every statistical test, concept, and methodology one can think of. There are also articles on the history of statistics, on conflicts in statistics, the future of statistics, on statistics as a discipline, and so forth, providing a view of statistics that I do not believe is found elsewhere at such a cost.

A caveat: if you purchase the encyclopedia you'll find that it will very likely be difficult to put down. I highly recommend purchasing a copy if you can afford it, or having your department, school, university library, city library, or business get it.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A review from a biased insider 25 février 2011

I am a coauthor on one article in this Encyclopedia and feel honored to have been able to contribute. I want to echo the thoughts of the other reviewer on amazon. Professor Lovric was a delightful person to work with. He was able to bring together lesser known statisticians from non-english speaking countries with many well-known statisticians from the US, the UK, Canada and Australia. In my case I am an author of a book on the bootstrap technique and so I wrote an article on that. however, Professor Lovric had authors from other countries write articles on the same topic and he was afraid he had too many and prehaps some redundancy. I reviewed the other two articles and offered to edited them and combine them with mine into one entry. The other authors agreed and the result I think was a much stronger article that benefitted from our different approaches and knowledge about the topic. I am sure that Professor Lovric could tell many such stories. He did this without sacrificing quality and many authors are Fellows of of one or more of these distinguished statistical societies, the American Statistical Association, the Royal Statistical Society and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. There are also at least two Nobel laureates in economics on the long list of authors (Kenneth Arrow and James Heckman).

The cooperation among nations and the great effort toward peace that was part of this endeavor did not go unnoticed. Professor Lovric was nominated this year for the Nobel Peace Prize and the nomination is very well-deserved.
