4.0 étoiles sur 5 Nice to Revisit Familiar Characters 31 janvier 2015

THE STORY: Carlie Blair is in trouble. Someone seems determined to kidnap and/or kill her. She works for a small town police department and either her job or her father's mysterious past may be at the root of the attacks on her. Carlie has another problem and his name is Carson. Carson is a mercenary who after being betrayed by his wife is determined to spend the rest of his life alone. Carlie and Carson have an attraction but everyone in town knows that the man who never intends to commit and the woman with old fashioned values are not a good fit.

OPINION: I was interested in this story and the characters although I didn't feel that there was enough to distinguish it from similar Palmer books. The mystery of what was threatening Carlie was interesting, but there were some parts that were too incredible to be believed. Despite this, I liked how Carson and Carlie had a relationship that was not based on physical attraction alone. This is the kind of book that is adequate for a one time read but doesn't have staying power that makes a reader think of the characters or story and want to return again.

WORTH MENTIONING: Palmer is still writing about characters with traditional morals and the only sex is within the bounds of marriage.

FINAL DECISION: This book was an adequate one time read, but there was nothing in the story to elevate it to a read again book.

CONNECTED BOOKS: INVINCIBLE is connected both to the Long, Tall Texans series and also the Wyoming Men series. This book can be read independent of those books, but there are recurring characters.

STAR RATING: I give this book 3.5 stars.

I have read DP's for decades and enjoyed her earlier books much more than her recent mercenary series titles. Her plots have become lack-luster and repetitive, her heroines cookie-cutter virgos (DP has become over-preachy regarding chastity), and her personal battle with asthma has found its way into stories too often. (I also suffer from asthma, not as severely as DP, but am finding it a tiresome character device.) At least Carson, the hero in this story, was not the much older experienced character DP frequently uses. (Can we say double standard regarding chastity and Daddy complex?) Carson had appeared in several other DP novels, so I was anticipating his story, which unfortunately was not that interesting. I also found Carlie, the heroine, to be quite insipid at times. Based on the declining quality of several of DP's recent hard-back novels' plots, I may wait until the paperback edition is released so I do not feel cheated for paying the higher price.

If you've not read the author's previous books about the characters/locations in this book, you can skip this one. Although nothing in the description or the title indicates that it's not the first in a series, reading it is like walking in half way through a movie. The author makes constant references to events and people as if the reader should be aware of them in order to understand what's going on in Invincible, but they're not part of this book. I can't even tell to which book the other characters belong, so (without research) I can't go get the other book to figure it out. It's extremely frustrating. Since I'm obviously missing most of the story, I've chosen to put the book down at about half way and not continue.

I am upset at myself for having read and especially having paid for this book!!! This book was super hard to read, the main characters were hard to like, especially the girl. She was miss o so innocent, who couldn't defend herself, stand up for herself, and whose innocence was constantly being mentioned by EVERYONE. in fact from what I could see her innocence was comparable to a child who went around playing video games and running up stairs. And of course there was the romance, or lack thereof between the main characters who, somehow , ended up in love and married by the end of the book. Just…don't waste your money!!!

Spoiler Alert***** If you have read any of Diana Palmer's books don't bother to read this since the plot is the same. I guess after you've written so many books its hard to be original, The h is virginal and weak. The H is supposedly this really smart mercenary, but he couldn't see the OW was at bare minimal in on the plot against the h. The OW gave away so many clues that she was involved a preschooler could have figured it out and solved the crime. He was this womanizer who dated all these woman and never slept with any of them. He of course is hateful to the h throughout 75% of the book, but she is of course willing to take any small attention. The h knows that someone is after either her or her father. She is left in the house by herself unguarded. Some random guy knocks at the door and tells her that her father has been in an accident. The guy isn't even in uniform and she willing gets in the car without making one single phone call to check the story. She works at a police station, you would think she has more sense. It at least would have been believable if he was in uniform. When the kidnapper tells her that her father has been in an accident she does take a minute to question why the police didn't come. The kidnapper gives her some lame story that she believes. The kidnapper says to himself when she questions him, do the police come to tell people when their family member has been in an accident. Then we find out that he is a former police officer. Oh My God, can this be any lamer, because if he was a police officer he would know. I can't believe I wasted my money!!!

I really try to stay away from interconnected series of books especially when they are suppose to be suspense. Authors tend to get lazy and the plots and characters all start to look the same. Their was no suspense and no romance. The H & h finally get together after 90% of the book is over. I guess that was the most shocking thing in the book is they got married because the H decided that he could no longer live without her and had laid to rest the demons of his past. NO ROMANCE and NO EXPLANATION.

I could go on and on about the similarities in Palmer's mercenary series, but don't have the time. I think she should have mercy and put this series to rest for good. She is probably under contract for several more, but I personally am done. Sorry Rourke, won't read his story, but I already know the plot,
