Présentation de l'éditeur

Sometimes the hardest part of a journey is knowing when it’s over.

When twenty-three-year-old Tom Allen and his friends set off from their English village to cycle around the world, they were expecting physical hardship, extreme conditions and a serious case of culture shock. But the hours spent poring over maps could never have prepared them for the experience of life on the road: the petty squabbles, the extreme hospitality, the unexpected joys and dangers.

And then Tom meets Tenny, a feisty Iranian-Armenian girl with dreams of her own, and hits a crossroad. Should he give up his grand plan for the girl he loves, or cycle off and risk missing out on the greatest adventure of them all?

HASH(0x8c7b7780) étoiles sur 5 A Cycle Tourer who can put the experience into words 17 mai 2014
Par Derek Cullen - Publié sur
Format: Format Kindle
I have just finished reading Janapar in the midst of my own cycle tour of Africa. Honestly, it doesn't take a special someone to go on a long distance cycle tour but having read many touring books on the road now, I must say that Tom Allen shines where many of these type of books fall down - he has an obvious talent to write and give a good portrayal of what it is like to take to the road like this.

The book is very descriptive yet thankfully it explores the human side of the adventure as opposed to the tedious details of A to B.

There are probably only three cycle tour adventures which I feel are worth reading at the moment, they are all quite different in their own way and this was definitely one of them. I highly recommend this book, you will want an adventure of your own whilst reading it.
Many thanks to the author :)

HASH(0x8c7b7798) étoiles sur 5 A wonderful story told honestly and engagingly 17 juin 2015

I feel like I have quite a connection to this book. Tom was writing it at the same time as I wrote one myself. We often shared office space in the halls of the Royal Geographical Society, would meet in the winter mornings for an icy dip in the Serpentine and then spend the day typing side-by-side (or distracting each other with daft things on the internet).

I read a full-length early draft of the book (which was great), gave some thoughts and subsequently read the full-length finished product (which was even better). I know that Tom went through multiple drafts, variations and edits in the process of honing this book to what it is now and it shows in the final product.

It’s a wonderful story told honestly and engagingly and provides an excellent accompaniment for the film.

HASH(0x8c7b7bd0) étoiles sur 5 Very Enjoyable Read 15 mai 2013

Over the years, I've developed a distaste for travel books, finding most of the ones I've read to be self indulgent or driven by an agenda. Tom Allen's Janapar is an exception. Sure, it's a story about travel, and I came away with wonderful mental images of African deserts and Armenian mountains. And it's about the people the author traveled with, both the good times and the conflicts. Here's where the author steps up to the plate - He takes responsibility for the conflicts, and the reader can see and understand how the young man learned from his errors. In the end though, it's a love story spread across three continents and between two people from very different cultures. I quite enjoyed the book. Well worth the time.

HASH(0x8c7b7f9c) étoiles sur 5 Lovely book 5 janvier 2014

i found Tom's website by chance and after reading some of his posts i decided to buy the book, as i liked his style and the idea of going by bike around the world seems appealing.
the book is an easy read, full of English humor and auto-irony. It tels a story which is bought outside and within. it is not what you would call an "adventure book", it is more like a diary.
i also like the way by which the present time and the past, i.e. the previous parts of Tom's journey meld into the books texture.

HASH(0x8c7b7f48) étoiles sur 5 Honest, introspective and exciting - absolutely recommended 17 novembre 2013

Absolutely excellent and deserving on the online hype surrounding the release of this book. I enjoyed the non-linear nature of the storytelling to build the suspense, and the author's iintrospection and turn of phrase really resonated with me. This isn't a "went there / did that" type of cycle book - this is all about the human response to love, adventure and adversity. Absolutely recommended.
