2.0 étoiles sur 5 Austen is great, but this Waxkeep edition is NOT 1 août 2014

At the onset, please know that Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors, so my low rating does not reflect on her but on this particular edition by Waxkeep. (I picked it up as a freebie to have a backup to my wonderful ebook set from Palmera Publishing.) The usual Waxkeep convoluted TOC and annoying, wide spaces between paragraphs are present; one comes to expect them. But many italics which SHOULD appear to indicate words which Austen deliberately chose to emphasize, do NOT (though SOMETIMES -- but not consistently -- all-caps are used in their stead). Far worse, however, are the distracting, leftover programming notes which appear in the text at the start of EVERY paragraph of some of the "lesser" works; this reflects editorial carelessness.

Since many of her novels are available individually in free public domain editions, and because there are so many well-formatted, low-priced, complete Austen sets available in the Kindle Store (some for as little as $.99 but several great ones -- such as the aforementioned Palmera set -- for only $1.99), there is simply no need to settle for this inferior one -- even if it is (at this moment) free. (And once Waxkeep resumes charging for it, you would certainly want higher quality for your money.) By all means read Austen, but I would strongly recommend you search, sample, and compare, and ultimately select another edition; both you and she deserve better than this.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Not Worth the Price 4 août 2014

I like the idea of having the complete collection of Jane Austen's works in one handy, and very portable location, and the price of $0 made this especially attactive; however, yhis definitely is not the one I wish to have. It is very awkward to navigate, and the Table of Contents is NOT linked to each separate work, although the remaining hyperlinks appear to work. I far prefer the Palmera edition, which generally more carefully follows the punctuation as originally written, and in addition, contains many charming illustrations.

While I have read most of Jane Austen's works, I have not read every single thing...now I shall be able to overcome this oversight with the Palmera edition!

The mother of all romance writers whose stores are studies in character and sly satires on social mores. One of the few writers I read and reread, laughing and smiling in recognition of flaws we all have and amazed that after 200 years the stories are as fresh and apt as when they were written. Miss Austen's insight never fails to amaze me and her intelligent heroines always enchant. She has little patience with the opportunists of this world at the same time that she recognizes the inequities of opportunities for women in her time. what a joy to have her work at my fingertips on my Kindle!

I'm not really sure what more I can say, except, "I bow to the master". I'm sure Jane Austen never thought that over one hundred years later we would still love Mr.Darcy and Elizabeth, Emma Woodhouse, and the sisters in Sense and Sensibility. But we do, because Miss Austen captured the very things that make us human- our pride, our prejudices, our meddling, our loves, losses, humor and pain. She did it with such a deft touch that we can still relate to her characters today. Brava!

What can you say? It's the collected works of Jane Austin and it was free! My wife is enjoying it on her Kindle Fire.
