5.0 étoiles sur 5 This is a handy and compact reference guide 27 octobre 2010

I recently received The Jane Austen Pocket Bible by Holly Ivins and have had occasion to use it a number of times. It is a small, compact, hard cover book filled with useful information about Jane's life, novels, characters, movie adaptations, and the like.

Sprinkled throughout the chapters are facts and quotations, such as:

Pocket Fact: "Some of Jeane's earliest encouragement for her writing came from her neighbour Anne Lefroy, or Madame Lefroy as she was known. Anne was a lively and intelligent woman who was a great reader of Milton, Pope and Shakespeare, and was even known to write poetry herself..."

In Her Own Words: "Our family are great Novel-readers and not ashamed of being so." (Letter to Cassandra, 1798)

The book is divided into the following sections:

Introduction (including a timeline of her life and how she wrote)
History and context, including a timeline of major historical events during this era.
Places Austen lived
Influences and literary context
Austen's novels
Characters in Austen's novels
Love, romance, and marriage in Austen's novels
Film and TV adaptations of Austen's novels

Next time I visit England, I will bring this compact treasure trove with me. More than a guide, this handy reference will inform me and help me to recall important facts as I visit the places where she lived and worked. Outside of travel, this guide allows me to quickly look up facts as I write my posts.

I've taken the attractive paper cover off, for the book tucks in quite nicely in my briefcase or handbag, and its hard red cover is sturdy enough to withstand the wear and tear of travel.

I recommend this book to teachers, students, and Janeites whose interest in Jane Austen is never ending.

My daughter is studying Jane Austen at school so to encourage her I brought this book which has just been brilliant. Lots of detailed info on Austen and all her books - my daughter has been able to dip in and out alongside reading Austen's novels. I have to admit I've also read it cover to cover! Highly recommended.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Great Intro Into the World According to Austen 26 juin 2011

I was looking for a gift for my girlfriend who is a big Jane Austen buff. I came across this book via a friend's recommendation and had to write a review giving it high praise. The gift went over fantastically and she absolutely loves it (having read it cover to cover several times). Intrigued as to what secrets it held, I had a read through and found it to be a very enjoyable, interesting read (despite not being a Jane Austen buff myself ).

A great purchase and a must for anyone who loves a little 'Regency romance'!

This fantastic little book served as an enlightening tour through the world of Austen both in her books and beyond. The novel summaries serve as perfect aides memoires whilst suggesting themes and interpretations which will help guide any student of Austen. Likewise, the character sketches provide warm memories of Austen's fondly remembered Regency ladies and their love interests. The Pocket bible does not shy away from delving into the history of Austen herself, and it is fascinating to find out what befell the writer whilst she crafted these stories.

Despite being intelligently written, the book is far from poe-faced. Ivins' lively style ensures that the book is an excellent read both as a page-turner and a reference work to be dipped into. Whilst praiseworthy in its succinct and enthusiastic engagement with the subject matter, this Pocket bible also offers the reader a variety of trivia and amusing facts. You may well find yourself armed with a whole new arsenal of trivia with which to challenge fellow 'Janeites' when meeting to turn a Quadrille! If that sounds confusing, buy the book and you'll soon follow along!

A perfect purchase for students approaching Austen's work for the first time, anyone who is a fan of Austen and even those who are yet to be convinced. Well worth a read!

I'm not finished with the book yet but I've found a few things that don't ring true. For one, the author states that Jane Austen's first love was James Lefroy. Even the movie goers know that it is Tom Lefroy. There've been other details that have differed from biographies I've read on the author. As far as I'm concerned the jury's out on this one.
