Two great reads for the price of one!

A brilliant sailor and a marvellous writer. This version of his writings contains two books, and I haven't yet read the second one. If sailing interests you, this book (or these two books) will hook you for life. Slocum was a brilliant sailor and a gifted writer, however he proved to be somewhat less skilled at making hard business decisions. But as a lone yachtsman, he was the first, and probably the best!
What a good story teller!

I love, love, love sailing and I love this book as well. Slocum was a masterful story teller and his true tales of his travels around the world feel like conversations with friends when you are sitting around the living room, enjoying after-dinner drinks, and just shooting the breeze. There is more than just the sailing tales in this book ... You get a sense of the cultures, peoples, and attitudes from the end of the 19th century. What I really found surprising was that Slocum's sense of humor still felt fresh. I laughed out loud when he peppered the deck of his boat with tacks so that bare-footed thieves would get a nasty surprise when they attempted to board the boat in the middle of the night. Of course the language and style is archaic but what do you expect for a story written more than 100 years ago???
One of the great true sea stories of all time

This is the classic FIRST around the world trip by a solo sailor. Slocum did not sail every passage alone and indeed that concept was a 20th century idea, but he did start the idea of long distance sailing for pleasure. Slocum did not start out with any idea of fame, but doing this on a shoestring he did do some public speaking as a way to earn money to continue the trip. A must read for anyone who likes messing about in boats.
This is must own

You don't need to be a sailor to love this book. You do need to admire people who live life to its fullest. This isn't just a tale, it's a book about a real man who lived life. I already own the hard copy but when Amazon offered it for our Kindle, I just had to add it to our library. This is a classic you'll love reading over and over again.
Engaging classic story so well told.

A man who undertakes the seemingly impossible yet doesn't dwell on the scale of his achievement. In a day where just a compass a 'tin clock' and old sextant were the limit of technology, he found his way around and alone. Remarkable
