4.0 étoiles sur 5 Nicely symbolic and child-friendly 9 juillet 2013

A nicely symbolic imagining of the afterlife underlies Michael Abayomi's The Journey, first in his Guardians and Lost Paradise series. Daniel wakes to a strange and dangerous world where surprising allies offer to guide his path. Meanwhile reapers ride dragons and threaten his soul, and strangely fierce and sad creatures hide, refusing to take the path to the other side as they seek re-entry to the lives they lost.

"The irony of the whole thing," says a friendly guardian, "is that those they are hoping to see again so badly are already waiting for them in the afterlife, wondering why they aren't there..." but sometimes it's hard to let go.

Letting go has many different guises in this novella, and Daniel needs to learn to release his anger and despair while holding onto trust. "Nothing is impossible," he learns as he steps onto the surface of water, "given the right amount of faith."

The Journey is a Christian fantasy, with clearly Christian themes behind the curious world it creates. The threats and action are exciting, with a pleasing adventure-game style. And the story's nicely tuned to young readers and their parents, with enough food for thought without provoking unwarranted reactions. By the end of the tale one journey's finished and another about to begin--a satisfying conclusion that clearly promises more books to follow.

Disclosure: I bought this novella when it was offered free.

The book starts with the death of a family member driving the survivors to forget the past with a new future. All goes well until...reality turns to fantasy. Much debate has been waged in Christian circles on the afterlife; the author's take is different from most, filled with fire breathing dragons ridden by evil beings and flying unicorns ridden by forces of good. Probably would appeal to age nine to 13 the most.

Danny is on his way to summer camp, when he and his family get into an accident. Danny ends up in a land between Heaven and the afterlife called Eden. There he is rescued by his brother and two other guardians from the reaper, who is the guardian Damian's father. They are there to help Danny get back home to his parents. But before that he will have to help save his brother from the land of shadows. This is a story of a young man's journey finding faith and hope along with trusting others. Excellent reading for all ages.

The Lost Paradise is the first in a five part series. It is a novella length story and suffers for it. The author is obviously a good writer, and has a lot of potential, but he moves very quickly from adventure to adventure without building up much tension or suspense. That's really the only thing I can be critical about. He does create a vivid and intriguing world in the Lost Paradise (dragons, Reapers, and flying unicorns! Not to mention the whole purpose of the place), and I could have easily given this 4 stars if it just had a little more to it.
