I first read
Ties that Bind ( Detective Madison Knight Series Book 1)
the first book in this series. Whilst I enjoyed the book sufficiently to then buy this one, I did have a few reservations about it, but I am so glad that I didn't let that stop me buying this. I found this one thoroughly enthralling and sought out as many opportunities to read it as possible. I found the interactions between the characters quite credible, although I am not sure how long Madison would get away with punching Terry in real life. It does, however, give a flavour of the banter between them. Madison Knight appears to be quite a complex character and I am not sure that she fully understands herself; I suspect there are underlying issues which will come to light in subsequent books. Her personal life is a bit of a mess, mostly because she can't quite decide what she wants from it but her job is all consuming for her and she appears unable to understand why anyone would want more from life. People who make the point that they have a life outside of work irritate her, mostly because she doesn't really have one and because she feels that by saying so they are saying that their lives are better or more important than hers.
From having few suspects in this murder, the team ends up with more than they can count. It is a cleverly constructed investigative narrative, with ups and downs, and unusually for this genre of books, a good reliance on forensic evidence which eventually leads them towards the right person but only through a series of other people.
This is a good read which doesn't give away its secrets too easily, leaving the reader looking for more and pretty much unable to get ahead of the author.
