Présentation de l'éditeur

The mechanics of lightness. The wide-ranging career of the Italian virtuoso. "The array of buildings by Renzo Piano is staggering in scope and comprehensive in the diversity of scale, material, and form. He is truly an architect whose sensibilities represent the widest range of this and earlier centuries." Such was the description of Renzo Piano given by the Pritzker Prize jury citation as they bestowed the prestigious award on him in 1998. Whereas some architects have a signature style, what sets Piano apart is that he seeks simply to apply a coherent set of ideas to new projects in extraordinarily different ways. "One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting all over again," Piano says. "Like a movie director doing a love story, a Western, or a murder mystery, a new world confronts an architect with each project." This explains why it takes more than a superficial glance to recognize Piano's fingerprints on such varied projects as the Pompidou Center in Paris, the Kansai airport in Osaka, Japan, the Tjibaou Cultural Center in Noumea, New Caledonia, The New York Times Building in New York, the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, Switzerland, and the Morgan Library in New York. Every book in TASCHEN's "Basic Architecture Series" features: approximately 120 images, including photographs, sketches, drawings, and floor plans; introductory essays exploring the architect's life and work, touching on family and background as well as collaborations with other architects; the most important works presented in chronological order, with descriptions of client and/or architect wishes as well as construction problems and resolutions; and, an appendix including a list of complete or selected works, biography, bibliography and a map indicating the locations of the architect's most famous buildings.

This is a pretty good book about Renzo Piano but it is more of a basic overview of his more well known work. There are more extensive books about him and his work out there but this is a good introduction to his work.

Well written, excellent photography with easy to read documentation on the architect Renzo Piano. A welcome addition to anyone's collection of great 20th century architects. Taschen reigns supreme, recommend!

Gorgeously photographed, terrific little coffee-table book.

Small in size, and thinner than I expected, but full of amazing photographs that not only give me a greater appreciation for Renzo Piano's body of work but also puts my imagination in over-drive.

Almost every page has a small blurb describing the building or some part of the process but it's hardly meant to be an exhaustive in-depth look at his work.

Think of this as a pretty "cliffs notes" version.

To my humble opinion, it is now more evident that Taschen has not taken the right direction with having only one non-specialized person to write around eight books from their Basic Architecture Series. Of these I've read four: Hadid, Calatrava, Shigeru and Piano. Nouvel... well, although I bought it, I've never feel compelled to read. Renzo Piano: The Poetry of Flight is like a rocket that never seems to care about launching. The texts are so vague, so naïve and sometimes so insulting, that I wonder what is going on with common sense with this author. The majority of the photo captions are so obvious that it would have been better to just leave the darn photo by itself. One included text in the lines of "the exterior glazing permits the passersby to contemplate sculptures by Giacometti" or "the building appears to float". Excuse me? I thought building was the attraction here. What Wait, have you read the books on the Eames, Prouvé, Frey or Neutra? Those books give so much information that you feel good about Taschen as an Editor, as a "Verlager"... What a wrong path to follow, to not even deliver the minimum so well stablished with previous books. To brag the tag printed about the author being Harvard-studied on economics and art history, explains the captions like the ones above and the focus of explanatory texts on "$400 millions dollar budgets" or on key people, or on vague descriptive, superficial facts; while totally ignoring TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF ACTUAL CONSTRUCTION, LANDSCAPE-CONTEXT, or INTERNAL ROOMS DISTRIBUTION... In the Corbusier book, even though it had some scarcity of pictures and plans in key projects, the text was so complementary, that you understood everything. Where is all that information gone to? To the bigger and more expensive Piano Monograph by Taschen? Well, the author, when I reached about the Hadid book by him, told me that more information was available in the bigger books. I would consider that an option if that book were not also written by him.
