5.0 étoiles sur 5 Essential Ponty & FZ 16 novembre 2010

I originally found this on vinyl in a used bin in Pasadena. It quickly became one of my all-time favorites, but was lost to me when all of my vinyl albums were destroyed by water damage in the Northridge earthquake in 1994.

I was THRILLED to find this digital download on Amazon and STUNNED by the price (currently $3.68). The quality is much better than the vinyl was. But more important was how well the performance has "aged" over the years.

Jean Luc Ponty plays Frank Zappa tunes with the Mothers of Invention. The jazz performances are bold and solid on some tracks and gently touching on others. Hearing "Idiot Bastard Son" and "Twenty Small Cigars" again brought me to tears.

Some of the tunes will be familiar to FZ/Mothers fans. "Music For Electric Violin And Low Budget Orchestra" is obviously an adaptation of Zappa's "Music For Electric Guitar And Low Budget Orchestra".

So for Zappa fans, this is required listening. It's a collection of his tunes performed by another virtuoso.

For Ponty fans, this is your chance to hear what he was up to before his more upbeat fusion days.

In any case, required listening. And if you absolutely hate it, it's only $3.68 and you'll probably get a $4 coupon in your email after you purchase it. So it's a very low-stake gamble.

This is a wonderful, one of a kind Jean=Luc Ponty album. Ponty is surrounded by many Zappa alumni on this brilliant Zappa tribute circa 1969. Even Frank drops in for a cameo lead guitar solo on the only non-FZ song in this collection ("How Would You Like To Have A Head Like That). This album belongs in every serious FZ fan's collection.

I heard this recording in the late 70's, while I was in college. No one appreciated it much then but a few listeners, I being one of them. I was also just learning jazz tenor sax at the time so I tuned in and wasn't disappointed. Now, many years later I find myself no less impressed by this music, and that we have yet to acknowlegde Frank Zappa as a legitimate American composer, and we as a culture don't really appreciate this music for it's importance to other genre's. Jean Luc Ponty was unknown to most Americans, and Jazz violin wasn't being given a lot of respect in this country, but Jean Luc Ponty is for real. His ability to play Zappa's very technical passages, and improvise, and change meters at the drop of a hat. George Duke, Ian Underwood, Arthur Tripp, along with a host of L.A. finest musicians and others have created a classic for those unfamiliar with Zappa's orchestral side.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A brilliant cover to boot! 23 février 2013

I've always wished Zappa would have just stayed with composing, producing, and arranging fusion and classical recordings. I wonder if that's where his heart really lay but he had to do the rock/satire to pay the bills???

The opening notes of this album are beautiful, thrilling, and seemingly indicative of a band playing at its peak. I find most of Ponty's solos a little screechy but there's much to love on this.

And the cover! It brilliantly and elegantly shows the planes in an aerial ballet to Ponty's fiddling. Near-perfect!
