Présentation de l'éditeur

Freeing knitters with all levels of experience to become involved in the creative process and still make a garment that is knit-to-fit, this template-based approach is not math-dependent and works for people whether they prefer a structured or more freeform process. Knit in New Directions introduces techniques that encourage knitters to just have fun: strip knitting, creative short rows, patchwork, crazy quilt, and free-form knitting. It then explains the other essential tool - full-scale templates. Knitters learn to use the templates in the book and how to make one to their own measurements. Garment designs support each technique and template with two options. The Guided Tour provides full instructions for specific sizes as well as measure-as-you go versions. In the Alternative Routes, the template functions like a coloring book that allows the knitter to create completely new designs. Practical advice for how to achieve the best fit and finish is included with each design: blocking, a special stitch for seaming, and edge and embellishment options.

Des modèles intéressants et originaux. Je le conseille aux tricoteuses qui recherchent du nouveau. De plus, c'est un plaisir pour les yeux.

HASH(0x9b1384b0) étoiles sur 5 Open your Mind and Take a Journey! 5 avril 2014
Par elle Warren - Publié sur
Format: Broché
Let go of all your tortured attempts to follow line by line pattern instructions! Let Myra liberate you from wondering if it is just you or is there a mistake in the pattern! Allow your knitting to reflect your own personality!

The concepts in this book are somewhat revolutionary. Old school, rule-following knitters might have trouble with the fact that the book contains no patterns. Like her previous sold-out book, Crazy Lace, if you are accustomed to seeing a picture of a sweater in a book and buying the recommended yarns and following the pattern, you might be frustrated. But if you can check your preconceptions at the door and read the book from cover to cover, you will absolutely be able to do this!

The ideas for the sweaters are worked within templates. You actually use your eyes and brain as you go, to create shapes and combinations that fit within the template you have created on graph paper, muslin or (my least favorite) gridded pellon.

You can start out slowly to test the waters with a rectangular purse. The same rectangle can become a center panel for a pullover, a side of a cardigan, or a module of a blanket!

There are mindless parts, mindful parts, surprises and delights in store for intrepid knitters who are inspired by this book!

Myra's students will discover that her positive philosophy and enthusiastic and gentle insistence that there are no mistakes, only opportunities, apply to much more than their knitting. This joyful approach to expanded creativity will enhance not only your wardrobe, but also your ability to draw upon your inner creative resources in other aspects of your life as well.

HASH(0x9b138504) étoiles sur 5 I THOUGHT I swore off modular knit garments as too tedious, too ugly and having all those fussy ends ... 16 juillet 2014
Par J. Fisher - Publié sur
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
I am a self-described "Myra-ite"-- I can't get enough of Myra Wood's ideas for knitting and crochet. I agree with a previous reviewer that this book may not be for everyone, but I disagree that you need to be very proficient at math. If this were so, this math-anxious knitter would still be wallowing in a mire of confusion, rather than merrily making a "Radiant Rainbow" bag and rearranging the stash I thought would make endless scarves into what I think will become a coherent (and beautiful) sweater.

I THOUGHT I swore off modular knit garments as too tedious, too ugly and having all those fussy ends to sew in!
I THOUGHT I could throw away my protractor (good riddance) after 9th grade geometry and that the discipline had no place in my world save for slicing pie. (If my math teacher had told me I could KNIT triangles, trapezoids and enless other shapes, and fit them all into a garment, I might not have daydreamed in class quite so much!)
I WANTED to design my own knitwear, but was stumped--would I ever have the skill or the inspiration or the creativity to design something that hasn't been seen in dozens of other patterns?
I'll ADMIT I'd rather knit (and crochet!) in my own directions than to follow endless charts written by someone else.

Knit in New Directions is so FULL of ideas that it may be intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of it, you realize that it introduces you to the many different ways you can knit together & piece together creative elements. Some techniques I enjoy more than others. I enjoy thinking on my needles & Myra tells me it's okay not to know what those explorations are going to turn into at the start. And no, you don't have to learn everything in the book all at once!

Years ago, someone told me there are "product knitters", who see knitting as a means to an end (a sweater, socks, mittens, a scarf), and there are "process knitters", who enjoy the journey. I've always said I'm a little of each. There's nothing like pride in a knitted item well done, but it's the most fun for me to explore and experiment & learn something new with each project. If you agree with that statement, you might want to check out Knit in New Directions!

HASH(0x9b1387e0) étoiles sur 5 Beautiful Color But Not a Pattern I Could Knit 1 avril 2014
Par Fairbanks Reader - Publié sur
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
This book is filled with COLOR! It contains 'templates' for many different types of patterns including sweaters, bags, vests, and cardigans. The patterns often offer alternative ways to complete the project depending on the knitter's desire for styling and size.

Most of the templates consist of short row panels. The finished patterns are beautiful but, for the life of me, I could not figure out how I could knit any of them. I enjoyed looking at the photos and appreciate the beauty of the finished projects but this book is just not for me. I could never knit any of these patterns - they do not have clear instructions. An example is that one would have to calculate stitches/rows by using the formula E8R 4X/E6R 14 X. If I was a mathematician, maybe I could do this, but I'm not very good at algebra.

I wish the knitters who purchase this book good luck with their knitting. That, and some good tutoring, might save the day.

If you like color, this is the knitting book for you. If you like ingenuity, this is the book for you. If you plan to knit it or just like looking at the pictures, this is definitely the book for you. I found myself putting post-its on practically every sweater in the book. On top of that, Myra Wood will show you how to create your own design and get a perfect fit every time. What? Me a designer? Yes, you!

HASH(0x9b1388c4) étoiles sur 5 Not Just for knitting, useful for crocheters and weavers 17 juillet 2014
Par N. Sarquiz - Publié sur
Format: Broché Achat vérifié
This book is about looking at the craft in a fresh new light. To knit (or crochet) shapes and fit them in a template. The result would be unique and individual as the knitter or crocheter themselves. Weaving would apply beautifully as you can use your weaving pieces (with fusible interfacing to stabilize the weaving), cut and sew them together to fit the template. For previous reviewers that gave this book a poor rating, this book is not about conventional written out patterns. This book is about taking those swatches, leftover yarns, odds and ends and turning them into a thing of beauty...piece by piece at a time. It may seem overwhelming to do this for a wearable garment, but starting out making a bag gives a beginner a sense of understanding of the process and the confidence to pursue the next level of this approach.

Another note about this book. Templates are not a 'new' thing. Templates are used in Irish Crochet and Modified Irish Crochet brought about by Russian and Ukrainian crafters. Templates are used in quilting. You use a template (pattern) in sewing. Freeform crochet and knitted garments are piece together through a template. The author demystifies the process.
