Knitting as with any subject or skill is subject to change or enhance over time. The writers of Dummies books also find ways to improve over time.

The third edition has more authors, and newer projects.

For people that do not have earlier versions, this is a great starting off book. Even if you just eat to know about knitting but do not have the time it is good to recognize the different methods and know a few terms.
Most of the diagrams and plates are in monochrome; that can sometimes be an advantage. there is a URL for online videos to help people visualize this with color and motion.

if you are familiar with the Dummies series of books than you know that there are all kinds of helpful hints and back-and-forth references.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great go-to book! 4 décembre 2013

I am a better-than-beginner knitter, but not by much. I frequently do not knit for months on end, then pick projects up again. This book is exactly what I need. Forget how to bind off? Find how to do it quickly. Need help deciphering a pattern? This book can help. A very handy reference, and all around big help for the new, or just the easily distracted crafter. I love the format, it is easy to read and very easy to find what you are looking for!

I've been knitting for almost ten years. I took a look at this book for the patterns. As far as I'm concerned, you can never have too many patterns. This book has many new ones.

My friend who has never knitted before read this and tried to knit. Knitting is one of those activities that needs to be taught by a person as opposed to a book. While the pictures in this book were very crisp and clear, it's not a person.

Once my friend mastered the basic cast on and knit stitch (she gave up learning by the book so I taught her), she used this book to further her education. It taught her how to read a chart, different knitting terms (ssk, m1, etc). There is an informative piece on how to read a yarn label. I liked the short history of knitting and tools. It also explained intarsia knitting and cables.

Pros:
Learning knitting terms
How to read a yarn label
Chart reading
Varieties of yarn composition
Patterns

Cons:
Not so much on teaching someone how to knit. My advice would be to find an experienced knitter to teach you or go on You Tube.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Hard to learn from a book but... 24 décembre 2013

this book also comes with online videos segments that provide additional help. I have knitted before, (not long though) but I still found reading the description of casting on a bit difficult. I am not great at following the text and visualizing what I needed to do and the pictures help but can't show it all. Between the text and the video I did manage to get it. I also have Stitch & Bitch knitting book which helped me to see it in a different way. Sometimes one will explain it better than the other.

The book has a wonderful Appendix of resources and I signed up for one of the beginner's knitting classes it mentioned. It wasn't that expensive so I felt it would be good considering I live no where near a knitting shop. The book is great, my only problem with it is was, I wanted to make a scarf and I liked none that they offered as a beginning project. I don't want to knit on the bias, which was one of the choices nor do I want to make a cowl. There was a Broken Rib scarf pictured in the book but I could never find it in the chapter they said it was in so that's the reason I am giving the book only 4 stars. Otherwise it is a great book and I know I'll refer to it many times as I learn to knit.

UPDATE: The beginning knitter's class at Craftsy.com that this book mentions is so wonderful I just came back to add onto this review. Besides the class, you get access to the Knitter's handbook of videos, which are slow enough to actually see what they are doing.
