HASH(0x900928f4) étoiles sur 5 Victor the Terrible. 9 juillet 2010

I hardly need remind persons seriously interested in buying this book, that the Career for Viktor Korchnoi has been one of the great drama's in chess history; A story of Striving, Triumph and Tragedy. While VK never quite placed his flag on the highest summit of chess mastery, that of World Champion. He did for a Decade lay undisputable claim to the right of Challenger for that Title.

So unlike many chess books, the Biographical portion of this book, IMHO is compelling reading, Viktor is either a great man and Artist who sacrificed everything his family, his nationality, his security in the world to pursue his professional and artistic vision; or he is an incredibly selfish man for doing the same, the reader and history must make their own judgments.

I don't have the Technical Ability or Rating to make deep statements about the chess, but there are some commonly accepted opinions of Victor's chess I can share here. In his Early Career up to say 1962 and his disappointing showing at the Candidates tournament in Curaçao, Victor's play was not always the best positionally, his style was better described by a tenacity in Defense, Tactical Excellence, and the ruthless counter attack. In time he would address the positional weaknesses in his game, but would retain the Tactical Vision; This combination of skills put him in striking distance of the World Championship.

Many, of the Games of in this collection speak to that early period, and if they are not always models of positional excellence, they are models of how to play when things go wrong; of the value of never giving up on a position, of always searching for the tactical resources that might be hiding just below the surface of a seemingly lost game. I think Viktor would not object to this assessment, as it has always been his fighting spirit that he prized most; a spirit that has never left him, and as such leaves him the oldest active player in the world today.

Opening theory is constantly advancing, and opening manuals are nearly obsolete as soon as the ink on their pages is dry in this modern era of computer aided chess. The beauty of Chess however is still ultimately found in tactical aspect of the royal game, in the forced line of play grasped and (often courageously) executed at the board; in this arena Victor has few peers and no equals; for while offensive greats like Alekhine and Kasparov gift us with magnificent examples of Tactically converting an advantage to a win; certainly a necessary skill and a source of great beauty at the board. Victor's Mastery of the Swindle, of the cold blooded combination from a position of defense that snatches victory from the jaws of apparent defeat, is to my knowledge unique in chess history.

So I recommend to you this book of games of my first chess hero, a collection I have owned for 20 years and still enjoy. Long Live Victor the Terrible! BB.
