In doing research for a longer-term solution I found that if you use certain probiotics you can actually help build tolerance for lactose gradually by colonizing your stomach with strains of probiotics (good bacteria) that breakdown lactose. One of these trains is lactobacillus acidophilus, which is found in a number of yogurts in small does. However, if you're like me then you may find you need a number of different strains of good probiotics in order to target the particular stomach issues that you have. For this I found this probiotic supplement, Pro-25, which is by far the most effective method I have come across in not just managing but overcoming my lactose intolerance. I still occasionally use Lactaid or lactose intolerance pills, but over the past few months I’ve found my need for them has diminished greatly.
In summary I'll say that Lactaid is definitely an effective pill to take if you have lactose intolerance. If you like to simply eat dairy on occasion it’s a great stop-gap to prevent stomach discomfort. But it will not stop your lactose intolerance problems from coming back whenever you eat dairy. If you would like to solve your lactose intolerance problems more permanently, then I highly suggest taking a probiotic like the one I mentioned. It won't help overnight but it will eventually enable you to eat/drink dairy regularly without having to take pills with you wherever you go.
I did have issues finding the chewable version in stores near me. I had one pharmacy order it the first time, but that's just not convenient as they would have to order it each time I needed to buy more, it takes forever for them to get it, then I would need to drive there to go pick it up. I'm glad I'm able to order this online and have it delivered to my door. Now we can make sure we have enough so my daughter never runs out.
We did have issues with the order at first, the caplets (pill version) were sent instead of the chewable tablets, but Amazon was awesome and they fixed the issue immediately and sent me the correct stuff. *Thanks for the awesome, super-fast service Amazon!*
I would definitely recommend the Lactaid Fast Act Chewables to anyone that is lactose intolerant, and also anyone that isn't able to swallow the large pill version of it.
As for the taste, my daughter says, "they taste like yummy vanilla ice cream" - her words exactly! So if you like vanilla ice cream then you'll probably enjoy the flavor of these.
I added some pictures. One picture shows the size of the tablets. They are a little smaller than a dime, and not very thick either. They are super easy to break in half also, if you only want to take half - like my daughter. I also included a picture of the ingredient/nutritional chart on the side of the box, as well as a picture of the back of the box that shows the information regarding how to take them and how they work.
One more thing, the price here on Amazon is way cheaper than what I would have to pay in a local store. I'm also getting more by ordering them through Amazon. The box from the local store only had 32 tablets in it, and it costs around $10-$12 for that. Here on Amazon I can get 60 tablets for around $13 (plus shipping). To me that's definitely worth it. I'm also not wasting gas and time driving to a store to buy them.
I will definitely be buying these from Amazon again!
The nutritionist recommended I take one or more Lactaid caplets either with my first bite or maybe 15 minutes before I started eating. She said that taking more than I need is better than not taking too little, and that since many foods have stealt dairy (many foods have whey, for example), if in doubt, just take the Lactaid. She recommended I experiment with how many I need for different kinds of food (more for milk or ice cream, fewer for cheese and butter), and if I need to take it in advance or not. She also said to not go more than 30 minutes while eating without taking more. When in doubt, take it.
In short, it works well, and I'm not adding to chemo side effects--which is a relief. Literally.
The packaging seems designed to mislead: there are 120 caplets, but you need to take 3 for 'one serving' of lactose. That ruins any savings one might get from 'buying in bulk.' There should be some clearer indicators on the packaging.
