Présentation de l'éditeur

Come home to Hickory Hollow, Pennsylvania--the beloved setting where Beverly Lewis's celebrated Amish novels began--with new characters and new stories of drama, romance, and the ties that draw people together.

"Much of the credit [for the growth of Amish fiction] goes to Beverly Lewis, a Colorado author who gave birth to the genre in 1997 with The Shunning..."
--Associated Press

Of her Old Order parents' five daughters, Tessie Miller is the last to marry. She has her heart set on Amishman Marcus King, but Tessie's father opposes the match.

Impetuously, Tessie and Marcus elope to the English world, then return to Hickory Hollow to live as singles, trusting they'll convince the Millers to give their love a chance over time. But when the unthinkable happens, Tessie faces the almost-certain censure of the People. Will she find a reason for hope in spite of her desperate plight?

"Vivid imagery captures the reader's attention as Lewis masterfully tugs at their heart-strings." -RT Book Reviews

HASH(0x92aee2e8) étoiles sur 5 Review of The Last Bride by Beverly Lewis 1 avril 2014

The Last Bride is book 5 in the Home to Hickory Hollow series. It's a familiar place with some new characters and some old friends.

Tessie Miller has seen her sisters marry and has been secretly courting Marcus King. Secretly, because her father has forbade them to court for reasons unknown to anyone and has picked a different man for Tessie to marry. It appears that her father did the same thing to Tessie's sister.

Tessie and Marcus go behind her father's back, to the English world, to elope. They come back to the Amish to live separately and sneak to be with each other. Then tragedy strikes and Tessie has hard choices to make.

I loved this book. I liked that it wasn't the usual Amish book. It was more than two Amish people courting. It was about the genetics of an almost closed Amish culture and how secrets can hurt people and relationships. It was as always an excellent book from Beverly Lewis.

I received a complimentary copy from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

Like all Amish daughters, Tessie Miller has tried her whole life to obey her father but she doesn't understand why he would rather have Levi Smucker court her instead of Marcus King - after all she is in love with Marcus not Levi. Her sister Mandy married the man their father wanted her to marry but Tessie is more inclined to follow her own heart. Little does she realize that the choices she makes will change her life forever.

I usually like Beverly Lewis's books and I've enjoyed the Home to Hickory Hollow series, especially the last book “The Secret Keeper”, but I was disappointed in “The Last Bride”. I tried, but I just didn't like Tessie and at times I wanted to shake her. When one of the characters said towards the end of the book about Tessie “Why didn't she say so?”, I was ready to scream “Yes, why didn't she???” Her whole storyline seemed a bit contrived and dragged on. Levi disappeared fir large chunks of the book and he never really developed as a character for me. The Mandy/Sylvan storyline worked much better for me – her heartache was very real and it was interesting to read and watch her relationship with Sylvan grow. Again that storyline was a bit contrived at times but much better than Tessie’s.

“The Last Bride” is the fifth and final book in the Home to Hickory Hollow series - it's too bad the series didn't end on a better note.

I really enjoyed this series and while you don't need to read all the books in order, you definitely should read this one last! Once again, we're treated to an interesting storyline, yet we encounter all the other folks in Hickory Hollow. This is the first time we're faced with a couple who goes against their elders and what happens when he is killed in an accident, leaving her to face the community. We've seen Bishop Bieler from the day he was left standing at the altar through a series of events which lead to his taking a more progressive (as it were) stance amongst the Amish Elders. I'll leave it to the reader to see what happens to this young woman and who comes to her aid, how and why.

This novel also takes a much more in-depth look at the health issues that face the sect, as a result of inter-marriage and a lack of "fresh genetics" - how the families look at this while continuing their stance on marriage. It's the father of this young woman who had a cattle business and then realized that his knowledge of cattle genetics can be applies to humans as well. A very 21st century look at a 19th century sect.

Once again, I have read another Amish fiction title, but this time it is by the author who gave birth to the genre, Bethany Lewis. I believe this is the final installment in the Home to Hickory Hollow series that started with The Fiddler, The Bridesmaid, The Guardian and The Secret Keeper.

The Last Bride centers on Tessie Miller, one of the five daughters from her Old Order parents. She is in love with Marcus King, but like Romeo and Juliet, they are denied to have a relationship. Her older sister, Mandy, advices her to leave things alone and obey her father's wishes, even though her sister is in a loveless arranged marriage.

Unknowingly to their family and friends, Tessie and Marcus travel to the English world and enlope, but instead of running away to live together as man and wife, they return home to Hickory Hollow and try to hide their marriage from everyone.

After a tragedy occurs, the true reason behind her father's disapproval is finally revealed. Tessie must have faith in the Lord and understanding of the true meaning of "grace," so she is able to survive.

Unlike Mrs. Lewis' other series, each book in the Home to Hickory Hollow series are stand-alone stories. If you have ever read an Amish romance novel before, then you probably know what the typical plot is - a young woman falls in love with an Amishman and they live happily ever after, but that isn't the case with The Last Bride. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but lets just say this one is a tearjerker. Despite all the new authors in the Amish fiction genre, Mrs. Lewis is still at the top of her game with her vivid descriptions and rich characters. Overall, The Last Bride is the best book from the Home to Hickory Hollow series.

Book 5 in the Home to Hickory Hollow, is not to be missed.
I believe all Amish fiction fans love Beverly Lewis she is sure a Amish literature Queen in her own right.
You will not be to disappointed with her latest masterpiece I am sure.
I can't wait to hear what you all think of Tessie and Marcus. I sure thought they they were quite the team. I was a little sad at the things that took place and what happened to Marcus. At times I wondered if Lewis was the author of this book. The writing style is much different then her other books.
I truly love the courting books.
I have to say I hated to see this book end. I feel a sense of loss at the ending of this series.
I gave this book 4 stars, and I recommend it.
I was given a copy of this book by the publisher for my honest review.
