His attempts to save an old friend from ruin at the hands of an unscrupulous media magnet lead to the loss of his job, his lifestyle and his girlfriend.
Down on his luck he does what he had sworn never to do and returns to the family law firm in the stiflingly conservative south coast seaside town of Westbourne. His new partners despite his protestations arrange through crooked "connections" for him to be appointed County Coroner.
