Descriptions du produit

Following up on the success of 2013 s Dreamachines, the third release by the classic Nova Express quartet is inspired by and dedicated to American poetic genius and father of free verse Walt Whitman. Combining the hypnotic swirls of minimalism, beautiful lyricism and the free intensity of improvisation, On Leaves of Grass is an exhilarating addition to Zorn s growing collection of mystical transcendental works. An emotional and virtuosic outing from this Downtown supergroup performing music that speaks to the eternal.

John Zorn's "Nova" quartet was born in the recording sessions of Interzone (2010) and has become one of his most vibrant and resilient ensembles of recent years. Their first CD Nova Express (2011) was dedicated to William S. Burroughs, and was filled with jump cut-up compositions based on largely atonal lines that implied a very advanced harmonic language. Fast and furious, this was the perfect soundtrack to Naked Lunch and The Ticket that Exploded. Their second CD At the Gates of Paradise (2011) was a brilliant tribute to William Blake and epitomizes Zorn's mystic series. Dreamachines (2013) was a tribute to Brion Gysin, Burroughs' cohort and co-creator of the cut up technique, and Zorn's compositions expanded into areas of Moroccan trance, Exotica and more. This fourth CD tributes another great and influential writer--Walt Whitman--and the result is their best CD to date, and one of my very favorite Zorn CDs of all time!

Lyricism is very much to the fore here, beginning with a touching and gorgeous intro by John Medeski on Whispers of Heavenly Death, which conjurs up the American West with a theme worthy of Copland, Elmer Bernstein or Morricone. Song at Sunset, Sea Drift and Song of the Open Road are examples of Zorn's new modular technique of changing blocks of repeated cells, but the time changes and tempo modulations are even more complex than before, and performed like a Swiss Watch. The band has been together three years now and has gotten both tighter and more familiar with Zorn's compositional language, making all the performances really stand out.

Halcyon Days is a beautiful exotica piece, interrupted by a moment of atonal intensity--exhilarating! The solos are gorgeous. This idea of juxtaposing moments of atonal free jazz blocks against more grooving, rhythmic and tonal ones is not completely new for Zorn, but he does it with a real feeling of mastery here--imagine elements of Glass, Reich and Riley dancing around with Schoenberg, Webern and Berg, along with Bill Evans, Bobby Hutcherson and more! Charles Ives is definitely smiling. Portals and The Body Electric continue this idea, representing the edgy side of Whitman's work, with an atonal theme leading into catchy vamps and some of the best vibraphone solos Kenny Wollesen has ever taken.

Everyone is stellar on this CD--incredible virtuosity but always at the service of the music. The band has definitely gone to a new performance level. A Mystic Cipher continues the mixture of "out" and "in" with the addition of Ikue Mori's evocative electronics, and comes just at the right moment--the sequence of the pieces is just perfect and things flow from one to the next such that there is never a dull moment. This is a true poetic listening experience and Zorn takes us on a real journey.

The masterpiece is left for the end--America is one of Zorn's greatest recent compositions--and runs thru so many different sections and styles it can almost be called one of his "file card" pieces. Like Spillane, Femina, Interzone and Mount Analogue, every section seems to relate to the subject of Walt Whitman. It has a stunning inner logic, one amazing section of music after another--and is one of my very favorite of Zorn's compositions for this band. This is a work of great power, beauty and originality, and it's not like anything the band has ever done before--a real breakthrough! After hearing this CD I put it on again and I pulled out my copy of Whitman, and read along. It really was a perfect combination. Zorn must be a huge Whitman fan because each piece captures the feel of the poem beautifully. Overall a stunning musical journey from first note to last.

"On Leaves of Grass" is the third release by John Zorn's Nova Express Quartet. When it comes to musical vision, the first two albums were similar in that the focus was avant-garde jazz. In contrast, this Walt Whitman inspired project is classified by Tzadik as a mystical work. To begin, 'Whispers of Heavenly Death' and 'Song at Sunset' are both cheerful and light. Such material is the embodiment of Zorn's mystical works, at least as expressed by this group. In a similar vein, the theme for 'Halcyon Days' is a delicious Jewish melody that inspires awe in the mysteries of the universe. Every now and then, this soundtrack to transcendent glory makes a surprise transition into a brief avant-garde breakdown. The juxtaposition is very well done. With a roller coaster of tempos, 'Portals' is straight-up avant-garde. After a jarring ride, 'Sea Drift' and 'Song of the Open Road' are a return to relaxing jazz. 'The Body Electric' is another avant-garde offering. Infused with Ikue Mori's electronics, 'Mystic Cyphers' is a lightning rod for darkness. The song is reminiscent of Zorn's Dracula inspired "Nosferatu." Before arriving in 'America,' each of the album's songs are only a few minutes. Almost fifteen minutes in length, 'America' is the album's epic offering. This is another sunny jazz song. "On Leaves of Grass" offers a curious foil between peaceful jazz and cacophonous avant-garde.

By itself, "On Leaves of Grass" is enjoyable but for anybody listening to the last few years of John Zorn's mystical and avant-garde works, "On Leaves of Grass" is a rehash. The avant-garde here is outmatched by offerings on the previous two albums, "Nova Express" and "Dreamachines." Beyond this, the sunny jazz may seem like a paradigm change for the group, but it seems to have gone unnoticed that the Nova Express Quartet (Joey Baron, Trevor Dunn, John Medeski and Kenny Wollesen) has recorded outside of their current moniker. Indeed, "At the Gates of Paradise" is one of the jewels in John Zorn's mystic series. While possessing merit, none of the songs on this 2014 release are as good as those on "At the Gates of Paradise" with regard to the melodies, compositions and performances. Unfortunately, "On Leaves of Grass" doesn't exceed or even match the group's previous work. In the end, this is a good album by a great group.

Walt Whitman is more than a american poet, specially in America. Zorn capture the lyrical spirit of his poems and also the modernity of his poems. Is the same group "Nova Express " a quartet with MedeKi, , Joey Baron ,Trevor Dunn and Kenny Wollensen, they play also in Nova Express and Dream Machines. The album is very nice, personally I prefer the other two, have more risky, this one is more conservative but great. The musicians are always in a high level in the improvisation, the only problem is that in same way I have the sensation of dejavu with other Zorn record.

I wonder what Walt Whitman would think of this!
