Derek Warfield is Ireland
le 19 novembre 2005 - Publié sur Amazon.com
This is a terrific CD both musically and historically. I have been a big fan of the Wolfe Tones under Derek Warfield's leadership and now I am a big fan of his solo efforts. I still like the WolfeTones but they are not as good without Derek. In any event, this CD is outstanding--an interesting mix of music and history with Warfield's passion and compelling voice to convey the joy, tragedy, love of freedom and stoicism that have so long been a part of Ireland and the Irish. He is a true Irishman and his music reflects the best and most poignant in the history of the Irish, including their absolute refusal over centuries of oppression and bloodshed, to accept domination by another power no matter how uneven the odds. The songs on this CD are full of humor, humanity, perseverance and love of life, and they are beautifully rendered. You will like this album.

An extrordinary, passionate album of Ireland past & present
le 5 novembre 1998 - Publié sur Amazon.com
Derek Warfield, who is without a doubt, the leader of the Wolfe Tones, reveals in this solo venture how much knowledge and passion he has for Ireland and things Irish. He tells the Irish side of the story that everyone else seems afraid to say! Whether its regarding the execution style murder by the English government's SAS soldiers of 3 unarmed alleged IRA members in Gilbraltor or the alleged famine ( the starving of the Irish people). He sings of the efforts of Australia attempting to break its ties w/ England (Australia the Republic). The whole album is an education about Ireland. Its past problems as well as the current issues it is facing. And he masterfully does this in an entertaining and thoughtful manner. I would recommend this album to ANYONE who has any interest in learning about Ireland and Irish issues!

Ex-Wolfe Tones member sings history lesson
le 16 juin 2001 - Publié sur Amazon.com
Derek Warfield made his name in the annals of traditional Irish balladry with his singing, songwriting and mandolin playing for the Wolfe Tones (who are continuing without him). For Legacy, his first solo disc, Warfield didn't stray far stylistically. There are still plenty of ballads about various people and events in Ireland's troubled history, and he augments them with essays on each song. Indeed, you'll spend nearly as much time reading the booklet as listening to the music. Sometimes it all seems a bit heavy-handed and overly serious, but it's safe to say if you like the Wolfe Tones, you'll enjoy Legacy (and his second disc, too).

Come All Ye Bold Hibernophiles
le 4 mars 2006 - Publié sur Amazon.com
Don't be fooled by the fact that this is Derek Warfield solo and not the 'Tones. I love the 'Tones. They are The Legend. But Derek in a solo format can really stretch out his vision of the superiority of the Irish experience. I would single out for your attention "Come All Ye Bold Geographers", a song you will never hear Derek do live because it is too slow and it is too important that the lyrics be heard over the din. But what a great "lay" it is: a particular witty brand of Irish lyrical stretches and allusions that I can never fully understand as an American but marvel at nonetheless. "Sean South" never fails to send a tingle down my spine. A great CD from start to finish. Loving, meticulous CD liner notes package crafted by Derek himself. Don't balk at the high price I see that it is going for. What price true culture?
