Présentation de l'éditeur

Frame by glorious frame, this beautiful graphic novel captures the essence of the Tour de France - the grit and the glory. Since Maurice Garin's inugural victory in 1903, hundreds of thousands of kilometers have been covered in pursuit of the yellow jersey and few of them have been without incident or drama. Here are the Tour's legends: Eugene Christophe welding his bicycle back together at the foot of the Pyrenees in 1913; Bartali V Coppi, 1949; Poulidor shoulder-to-shoulder with Anquetil on the Puy de Dome, 1964; Tommy Simpson's death on Ventoux, 1967; Lance Armstrong's domination and disgrace; finishing with Bradley Wiggins' and Chris Froome's victories back-to-back victories for Britain in 2012 and 2013.

Biographie de l'auteur

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Beautifully Drawn Tales of Tour de France Legends 23 août 2014
Par Stephen D. Kirkish - Publié sur Amazon.com

"Legends of the Tour" is a beautifully illustrated retrospective of the most prestigious race in cycling. Cleijne deftly covers 100 years of racing, from the earliest days with primitive bikes, a few sturdy riders, and no support, to the finely tuned, high-tech modern times. He shows love and care for the sport and the characters involved, throwing spotlights on the most significant riders in the past century.

Cleijne's art is beautiful, from glorious splash pages showing a tree-lined country road filled with riders and fans, or illustrating the painfully relentless ascent of Alpe d'Huez, to multi-panel pages unfolding the emotions of victory or tragedy. Key riders are well-drawn and recognizable. The stories are told primarily through the imagery and captions, although he often lets the pictures tell the tale, very effectively. The colors are at times moody (putting us on the mountain in a storm,) or sunny, reminiscent of color palettes from the 1920's cartoon strips. His story-telling is spot-on, infusing gentle humor at times and pathos at other times. The infamous doping years are not glossed over - their impact is explored as much as the impact of other important events during the Tour's 100 years - but he covers the encouraging path that cycling has taken to pull out of these dark times, covering recent Tours right up to Chris Froome's win.

I've enjoyed watching the Tour de France for years, and this book lends an important background foundation in an entertaining fashion. This is also an amazing book for those who love good graphic art and story-telling, and for those who enjoy riding a bike. It's amusing, inspiring, and quite beautiful - I high recommend reading it!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Amost but not quite a Tour de Force. 6 novembre 2014

Having never bought a graphic book before, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I think this is for real fans of the Tour de France, which I am. It was interesting to note the increase in brightness of the sections which seemed to replicate advances in photography. The history of the Tour was really interesting. I loved the images of the riders with all their pain and elation but there were rather too many similar scenic images of just mountains for example.

This book is comic like in its design. Lush graphic pictures fill its pages. The book itself is simple in its explanation of the history of the tour but is absolutely delightful in its execution.
3.0 étoiles sur 5 Great idea, not so great on execution 2 avril 2015

I so want to gush about this graphic novel. The idea of pushing into this market with something on professional bicycle racing is awesome. Unfortunately I have several problems with the project. The atmosphere tones mimicking changes in photography over 100 years of the Tour is a cute idea but it does get bland after awhile. The beginning is so dark green that it might turn non-fans off. Second the lettering is small as in newspaper comics small. On a comic strip its a few words and done. In a graphic novel page after page… sigh. But my biggest gripe is the art. I'm actually fine with everything but the faces. I've been follow professional racing for more than 10 and if I have to squint and think about who's who on a panel something is wrong. There are tons of tricks to get around the issues of keeping the star of the action but that was not done enough. The actual drawing itself just plain needed to be better. If I can't get Bernard Hinault at a glance there is a big problem. I know these faces. I'm well read and well traveled on the cycling sites. I really wanted to love this book.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 ... and essence in a new form never applied this amazing race. Jan Cleijne brings to life not just ... 1 novembre 2015

Format: Broché
This graphic novel captures the images and essence in a new form never applied this amazing race. Jan Cleijne brings to life not just the images but also the mood of the times. The book is best appreciated by someone who knows some of the history of the Tour, who may have cheered when LeMond won by 8 seconds or followed the rise and fall of Armstrong. The illustrations capture the likenesses of the riders and the brutality of the stages and then go a step beyond for legends such as The Cannibal. My daughter knew this book be a bridge between her love of graphic novels and my enjoyment of cycling and the Tour.
