The build quality looks good with a thick, sturdy aluminum housing and fairly thick glass lens. The body threads together in three parts; main body, rear body, and lens ring. Each part (including the lens) seals with a silicone O-ring. The cable exits the rear body piece through a silicone grommet compression fitting, which is itself threaded into the rear body with a silicone O-ring. The light aluminum mounting bracket threads into the main body but the threaded holes do not penetrate into it. Aluminum is a good choice of material as it's highly resistant to corrosion (even in salt water), and dissipates heat well.
Inside the housing is a small DC-DC converter/regulator PC board which steps down the input voltage down to 9VDC for the LED array. The LED array consists of 9 LEDs, tightly packed on a single substrate, which are wired as three parallel strings of 3 LEDs in each series string. In open air, the lights get warm after a few minutes, but the body has enough mass and surface area to keep it safe to touch even after running for an hour+. In water, temperature would not be a issue at all. The entire fixture pulls about 550ma at 12VDC, resulting in about 6.6 watts total. The LED array itself sees about 5.6w (9VDC at 625ma).
These lights are quite bright and the color is surprisingly warm, being more like an incandescent/halogen bulb than the typical blue-white of most LEDs. The light radiation pattern is perhaps 90-100 degrees wide and consistent, fitting the "floodlight" category nicely. There does not appear to be any concentrated "spot" in the center at all, making them ideal for the underwater video light am I building. These would be good for normal video lighting as well, although are only going to be really effective within 2-5 feet, even if you use several of them.
While the factory water-proofing should be fine for placing them 1 to 3 feet underwater in a pond, I have completely dis-assembled them and re-built them with additional heavy silicone sealant to make sure they can withstand SCUBA diving depths of 100 feet or more. Overall I am pretty happy with these and would recommend them to anyone for a variety of uses, especially for around 15 bucks a piece.
The two are far brighter and cover a whole lot more area than the 1 original halogen bulb headlight that would blow out.
Purchased the OEM mounting bracket + hardware for my snowblower to mount the 2nd light to, so far so good.
The original write up called out the input 10-32vdc. I see now the write up only specifics 12v .... not sure what is true.
But my testing up to 20vdc and 20vac, seem to show it's A-OK .
The main issue is that it claims to be IP68. Which means it is rated for dust tight and water tight, submersible greater than 1 meter deep.
The one I got can't keep rain out. The cable penetration is not sealed at all. The rain enters freely and collects in the lens.
Some calk should make it rain tight but it should be submersible...
