Présentation de l'éditeur

The phrase “lessons learned” is such a common one, yet people struggle with developing effective lessons learned approaches. The Lessons Learned Handbook is written for the project manager, quality manager or senior manager trying to put in place a system for learning from experience, or looking to improve the system they have. Based on experience of successful and unsuccessful systems, the author recognises the need to convert learning into action. For this to happen, there needs to be a series of key steps, which the book guides the reader through. The book provides practical guidance to learning from experience, illustrated with case histories from the author, and from contributors from industry and the public sector.

  • The book is a practitioner-level guide to the design and the mechanics of lessons learned processes
  • Takes a holistic approach, tracking lessons from identification to reapplication
  • Makes the case for the assignment of actions for learning

Dr. Milton's book is very insightful and practical-oriented about learning at individual as well as organization levels. Its main focus is on how an entity can learn from its failures and successes and implement lessons for attaining a better performance. It includes success factors as well as failure factors (to be avoided) about learning for being performant. It offers steps to be followed for a best learning. I find this book a must read for all those interested in learning.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The most comprehensive book on lessons learned 19 juillet 2013
Par Wes Hagood - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
"Learing from experience is the most basic of human activities."

With these words, Nick milton begins a comprehensive treatment of lessons learned in a book wholly devoted to the subject. Clearly he understands this subject intimately. The information in the book comes from many years working in the field of knowledge management of which he considers lessons learned a sub domain.

This book represents the only comprehensive treatment of lessons learned. It can be used by individuals or organizations who want to develop or improve a system to learn from experience.

The book begins by comparing learning among individuals and organizations and presents evidence about the value and benefit of learning lessons. Case studies are presented throughout the book to support and reinforce the principles decribed in each chapter. The book's contents include the elements of a lessons learning system, lessons learned approaches, principles of lesson identification, processes used to identify lessons learned, documentation of lessons, action planning, process ownership, ensuring lessons are implemented, technology support, governance and two comprehensive case studies within the saftey and manufucturing domains. The book ends with 100 ways, "How not not learn lessons" that unfortunately describes the practices followed within many organizations. This list could be used as a diagnostic tool to assess whether an organization is learning or failing to learn from experience.

The book contains numerous graphic diagrams which supports the narrative and makes it easy to understand and apply the information contained therein.

This book should be on the bookshelf of everyone who calls themselves a lessons learned practitioner. Although the book is relatively expensive,it is worth its weigth in gold. It is highly recommended!

All the information in the world won't help you if you don't know what to do with it. "The Lessons Learned Handbook" is a guide for businesses who want to promote the importance of learning from experience, a subject that often falls through the cracks of understanding. Encouraging success from failure and learning form the past, Nick Milton, a knowledge management specialists, states that everything is a learning experience, and explains this concept more completely through how one learns, and the principles of trial and error. With additional notes on technology, how to share knowledge, and experiences from other businesses, "The Lessons Learned Handbook" is full of information and makes for a highly useful and highly recommended read.
