The only problem is that I was assured by the manufacturer that it had a very narrow range, meaning that it would only work if the remote control was pointed directly at it. Unfortunately I have many remotes and quite a small living room, so any TV watching resulted in a constant cycle of the light getting brighter and then turning off.
With massive thanks to Google, I found someone online who had a similar problem with an electric rubbish bin opening and closing whever he entered the kitchen, and took his advice of wrapping plastic electrical tape around the sensor. Depending upon the colour of the tape and the amount of layers you apply, the sensitivity of the device can be adjusted accordingly. This is not a job for the impatient, and after weeks of trying I am still searching for the exact balance between the light not working and my front room turning in to a disco, but it does seem to work.
I may yet succeed, or eventually give up and wait until I move to a bigger house, but I still think that this is a good product that does exactly what it says it does.
Won't fully turn modern LED lightbulbs off either, just dims them to a faint glow as it has high leakage current.
Might be just about usable in a room with no other remote controls, with an incandecent, halogen or compact florescent bulb...
Given the price, I couldn't be bothered returning it. Has been thrown out and a Varilight unit purchased instead, which works fine.
I'm afraid I can not recommend this item.
I liked the idea that I could use any remote control as I seem to be burried with them on the sofa, and at first I liked it when i got it after positioning it right, now this took a bit of fiddling to cut a standard pendant ceiling light fitting shorter so this unit would fit in. the screw bit that holds the shade in place.
It did function reasonably well to start but didn't work if the remote was more than about six feet away, no matter whcih remot I used or how new the batteries were.
Then it just stopped working after about 2 days use.
I then found while packing it away in its packaging for chucking in the bin, an extra tiny slip of paper with the item which says something about not suitable for energy saving bulbs- it didn't say this on the web page when ordering or I wouldn't have ordered it!,
" Suitable for all lamps with a bayonet fitting" - well it's not the page needs changing and I guess I should have tried to get a refund!
I mean who but the most flippant rich, nonchalant and totally ANTI-GREEN uses the old energy wasting heat bellowing bulbs these day anyway!
A total waste of time and money. I can't give it zero stars or I would.
A simple summary for me is that the product is basically useless unless you have no other infrared devices in your room; effectively no matter which way you point your remote it will turn the light on and off. I removed it within an hour and tossed it away shortly afterwards.
