5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great prints by great photographer. 5 mars 2013
Par S. Rodionov - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
This book is one of three available albums of Lillian Bassman and it was published shortly before she passed away in 2012.

She was one of last true artists in photography. Its people like her, that made fashion photography into art, and it was art for a while, till it got degraded once again to its present level. Dont look at this album as some sort of historical excursion into lingerie or any kind of guidance on advertising (she did quite a number of advertising shoots for large lingerie accounts back in days).
This is artistic collection.

And if you tempted to buy it in electronic format - dont. Buy a real printed album - these prints do deserve to be viewed as intended - printed on paper.

And most of all - enjoy it. Enjoy vision of true artist from bygone era of photography that was driven by inspirations from art, dance, ballet, music and paintings. Era when Avedon, Schteichen , Penn created their masterpieces. And so did Lillian Bassman.
3.0 étoiles sur 5 The shipping was fine and the book in good condition 13 juin 2016

When buying from Amazon, I can't review the book in advance. The shipping was fine and the book in good condition. The book itself was just okay. Was expecting more from the cover shots as far as unique designs.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 An important icon captured. 12 août 2013

Short and sharp with iconic images well rendered. Only lacks clarity and depiction of how the originals groundbreaking photographs were altered later in Bassman's significant career.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Not worth the price 10 octobre 2012

I loved the idea of seeing glamour shots from yesteryear as this is one of my favorite areas of photographic practice. I love shooting glamour when I can and thought I'd like to see how a famous women's photographer from decades ago when glamour was at least risque had made compelling shots. While I enjoyed the few photos in the book (have the Kindle version on my iPad), the text was superficial. Overall, there are very much better resources out there that deal with historical photography, including glamour and beyond. I doubt Lillian Bassman would have felt this book was sufficient to convey the substance and essence of her work.
3.0 étoiles sur 5 Wasn't really familiar with her work, but as a photographer, this book hasn't made me a fan - can't recommend this one. 21 avril 2017

I'm quite sure I will be considered a slob with absolutely no culture, but I'm sorry, I bought this book having seen a few of Bassman's photos on the web and I've been doing pin-up/boudoir photography as a hobby and side business since the late 1980's - I'm afraid I am utterly unimpressed. I have a lot of photography books, mostly dealing with women, fashion, lingerie, pin-up art, and things of that nature as I love studying the glamour years and replicating them with my photos.

To be quite honest, unless you already know Lillian Bassman's work and happen to be a big fan, this book will probably disappoint you, as it did me. I suppose it's like how some people rave about Bob Dylan's talent, while others, like myself, just don't see it or understand it. As a longtime photographer who started with Leicas and now uses a small fleet of digital cameras and a lot of editing software as well, all I can say is, Bassman's "style" is perplexing to me - if anything, her style was to take pictures that were extremely grainy (lots of noise) and generally out-of-focus. If you like photos that are deliberately out of focus with a whole lot of grain (we're talking sand paper here), then you'll probably like her work in this book. Maybe ten or fifteen images I found to be interesting and of any real value, the rest, sorry, just didn't impress me as anything but somebody trying to be very avant garde in the film age with very poor quality images that some people, obviously, find appealing. Sorry, didn't appeal to me.
