5.0 étoiles sur 5 GREAT Product!! -- This is a basic, handsome, & large tea chest of reasonably good quality at an --extremely-- affordable price. 24 novembre 2014

This Lipper International Tea Chest is an affordable and very good-quality tea chest. If you are looking for a tea chest that is on the value side of pricing, but still has good quality, this is a great choice.

Sized externally at about 12L x 7.25W x 3.5H inches (inner dimensions are about .35 inches less as that is the approximate thickness of the walls) this Lipper International tea box is constructed of bamboo and has 8 separate compartments to organize tea. The compartments are made from a single insert (rather than glued down) and so you can remove them to have an open box without compartments if you so desire. A small chain holds the lid open at about a 120 degree angle. Using hardware that is brass (presumably plated), it not only looks good with the bamboo, but will help prevent corrosion (always a plus for something used in the kitchen.) Each of the 8 compartments can fit (for me) about 12-20 tea bags, depending upon the size/thickness of the individual package.

I am very happy with the product that I got. As a start, the size is generous and so I can fit the wide varieties of tea I have all into the same box...a lot of tea chests are too small for this. The bamboo looks really good and by finishing it with just a laminating material allows the beauty of the bamboo to shine. While it does not have the visual striking appearance of many hard woods, the bamboo is a classy finish that blends well with most every decor. Thanks to it being laminated, upkeep is minimal (now and then a rub down with something like a tiny bit of butcher's block oil will bring back its shine.) Bamboo is a very strong material and it should give this box good longevity and good resistance to damage.

On the downside, the hinges are lighter duty and the chain used to hold the box open uses extremely delicate hardware which may need replacement with extended usage...with that said, these are pretty minor issues for something priced so affordably. Finally, the height of the tea box is not tall enough for the unusually large tea bags...which, while not an issue for me, may be an issue if you constantly drink a certain tea that comes in a very large wrapper.

So overall, I am absolutely thrilled with the design & quality for under 20 bucks shipped. There are many tea chests available that are made gorgeous with some of the finest hardwoods on planet Earth...and they usually come with a price tag that reflects this. I wanted a good-looking tea box of generous size that is of reasonably good-quality and for a reasonable price price...this Lipper International does exactly that, and so if that is the type of tea chest you are seeking, this is a great choice!

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Bait & Switch; NOT as Pictured 17 juillet 2015

I'm really mad. I was looking forward to receiving this after reading a bunch of nice reviews. I received it today and it's cheap junk. There are no dovetail joint corners as shown (they're just glued together with straight, rough edges), the top doesn't have the nice rounded edges as shown, instead rough angular edges. The inside divider unit is misaligned so that some of the compartments are warped, and there are actual splintered edges all over this box - to the point that you can't wipe it down with a rag without it catching all over the place. I can literally run my hands along and get splintered or just pull loose pieces of wood slivers right off. I re-checked both the listing photo and other customer photos and it is absolutely NOT the same box. Then I noticed just in the last few days a couple of other brand new reviews saying the same thing, so they are obviously sending out cheap substitutes now instead of the nicer ones that the older reviews are referring to. I needed this as a display for an event so I didn't return it, I'll cut my losses and stick it in the cabinet until it breaks which won't be long, but it certainly is not the nice display box that is shown. I feel genuinely cheated.

**Update July 31 2015** I kept getting emails from the seller saying the item was delivered but I didn't leave feedback, even though I posted this review on the very day I received the item. So I finally wrote back so they would stop emailing me and said I had in fact left a review and that I was not happy at all, that it was not as shown, no dovetail joints, splintering in places, etc and they wrote back and said: "Ok thanks". That's it, no "gee, sorry to hear that", no "that's not how they should be", nothing. Granted, I didn't ask for a refund, but they don't seem the least bit concerned with customer satisfaction so I felt it was important to add that to this review. The only thing worse than a poor quality product is a company who obviously doesn't care that you are unhappy.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Your chance of getting a well-made box are less than 50% and it will not have finger jointed corners like the box in the picture 4 juin 2015

First, the Amazon picture shows a box with what woodworkers call a box joint or finger joint. That is a premium construction method for boxes, with a large amount of contact surface for glue, producing a strong box. But the boxes actually shipped by Amazon have lap joints, a weaker, but cheaper construction. The lap joints are glued and also have tiny, nearly invisible, steel nails, probably to keep the parts together until the glue sets.

Even so, the boxes look great and have potential uses beyond holding tea bags.

The laminated bamboo material itself is very attractive and nearly flawless. I suspect there are a huge factories with much automation that turn out tons of this product and have high quality standards. I have seen bamboo flooring and wall paneling that must also have come from such a factory. The boxes are small enough that I am not worried about the health issues associated with the formaldehyde glue typically used in bamboo lumber.

The boxes themselves often exhibit sloppy workmanship, not surprising in a Chinese hand-assembled product. The bamboo parts are mostly accurately cut so they have the potential to fit together properly. Most of the problems I saw are open or loose joints where the parts were not tightly clamped together after gluing and before nailing, or did not get enough glue. A few boxes also had rough areas on the rounded corners, places where too much material had been sanded off after assembly or uneven saw marks where the top and bottom come together. The hinges were fastened with flat head screws, but the holes in the hinges were not countersunk, so the screw heads protruded. Some screws were driven at an angle, leaving the head tilted. Many of the hinges were fastened to the boxes crooked. The proper fit would have the hinge pin aligned exactly on center with the close-fitting junction between the top and bottom of the box. I am replacing all of the screws with round head screws, that are made to work with non-countersunk hinge holes. In many cases, I have to plug the original screw holes and drill new holes that allow the hinges to be properly aligned.

I wanted about ten of these boxes to hold a certain type of tool I use. The dividers in the boxes are loose and easily lifted out, making the box ideal for things other than tea bags. My Liquid Planet tea bag packets don't fit in the divider sections, so I will not be using any of these boxes for tea. I had to buy 22 boxes from Amazon to get 10 boxes that had easily repaired defects or essentially no defects. Twelve boxes were returned. So your chance of getting a well-made box are less than 50% and you still will not have finger jointed corners.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Doesn't fit teabags but Great for Homeopathic Remedies. 28 avril 2016

Pros: Price, look, feel, repurposing possibilities, Perfect for storing Homeopathic Remedy tubes!
Cons: Doesn't fit some tea bag styles, left back corner compartment obstructed by chain (still works for homeopathy, didn't work well for tea bags), doesn't close well when stocked with tea.

2* for tea bag storage
4* for homeopathy storage

I like the look and feel of this box & kept it to use for other purposes. Unfortunately, it doesn't fit the tea bags as well as the clear lid version by Lipper, causing the lid to stay slightly open. Plus, there is a chain in the back left corner that keeps the lid from flopping backwards when open. This is handy but makes it challenging to store teas in that compartment.

When I found it didn't work well for tea, I replaced it with Lipper's clear lidded version, which does fit all my tea bag styles and I'm finding the clear lid useful in that case, as I have two of them and can easily see which teas are in which box. Instead of returning this one, I am using it to store and organize my tubes of 30C homeopathic remedies, and it is PERFECT for my HOMEOPATHY! The compartments keep the small blue tubes separated enough to make it easy to locate what I need. I store mine alphabetically, in groups (A-B in one compartment, C-D in another, E-G, etc.) and I use a sharpie to write the first 2 letters of the remedy name on the top of the remedy lid, for easier identification. I know this doesn't help with tea storage but I thought I'd put it out there that I find it useful for other purposes, in particular, one that I've been searching for for a solution to for quite some time. I have a lot of remedies and still have empty compartments, although I wouldn't if my 6X and 30X remedies were in the same style tubes, as I could fit those in and utilize the remaining compartments. It also fits packs of oscillococcinum remedies. I love it for this purpose and am grateful for the "happy accident".

As soon as I opened the delivery box I could hear something loose. It was part of the divider that looks to have never been glued. It was already splintering as soon as I opened it. The dividers are very uneven. The chain doesn't allow for on of the dividers to be filled. I'd look elsewhere if you want a nice product.
