HASH(0x9867942c) étoiles sur 5 Mind Altering Stuff! 30 mars 2004

Format: CD
I never saw them live, I'm not from New York, and I don't have all the player's names memorized. I'm also not hip to all the interpersonal band and career drama either. All I know is that SHT is all I listen to now. Everything else sounds shallow in comparison.
It's the hippest trip for all those eclectics out there (The hipper than thou!) who can appreciate some jazz in their punk, and some black in their rock. Dave Fiuczynski is totally out of the box playing like his hair is on fire without a cliche in sight. Controlled reckless abandon, a psycho-phonic Be-Bop Hendrix death ray, and unadulterated whammy abuse. And all this without the use of octave displacement! I wanna be like him when I grow up.
Singer Dean is expressive, creative, and draws from influences every-which-a-way to create something really fresh but still steeped in the great African American traditon of extrapolation, honesty, great story telling, and REALITY. He's the real deal folks.
Any guy who can can write such a cool song about basketball legend Darryl Dawkins and pull off a brilliant cover of The Beatles' "Dig a Pony" get's the Medal of Honor in my book. I dig his yodeling too. And when Fuze doubles the yodeling lines it's truly inspired.
The rhythm section is oh so glorious. I could go on and on but I can't think of a better phrase than oh so glorious. Ok, groovalishious! The monster is walking with a jazz-hop swagger while Miles and Weather Report check them out.
It's just a great over all concept, vision, vibe, statement, and sound for a band. I hope they get back together and come to LA. Count me in.
I recommend this disc to any guitar player who thinks he has it going on. Ya' just don't and that goes for Steve Vai too. Back to the woodshed home skillet.
I personally will freely borrow as many licks as I can legally get away with. I'll give them back later, but slightly altered.
Buy this disc and allow your mind to blossom.

I had the good fortune to be at this concert, and I have to say it was one of the best performances I have ever seen. Fuze (guitar) is on fire and Dean (vox) is deep - and the rhythm section cannot be beat. All of the players are some of the best in the biz but this is a real band that tears into these tunes with joy. Hard to believe these guys aren't huge.
They remastered this from the Japanese version and I have to say it is much much better sounding now. If you love virtroustic playing AND great pocket, don't miss this cd...!!!

Although I don't find this recording to be the band at its peak (Hope was much faster in the early days....and it's not the drummer either...Jojo was terrific on the record and at the old Knitting Factory, A.K.A., Lion's Den and maybe the Cooler?; Rodney kicks just as hard, but like himself as he should!). The guilty member on this night is Dean (the singer) who sounds a little fed up on various tracks (the band has had their fair share of BS having to cope with this undercultured and infantile mentality of the industry) and to me, shows in his solos; he yodels (Word to Herb) almost to the point of it being too much; like a gimmick; maybe it's a subconsicous statement about what the industry really wants (no offense intended, he is musical, soulful and an outstanding vocalist). It's so hard doing music of this caliber only to be rejected by undereducated record execs. Where are the impressarios when you need them?!! Buy the's art...real art...step out of thyself and tune in! Miss this band!! Thanks David, Dean, Fima, Jojo, Daniel, Rodney...and all the subs for some of the greatest nights in NYC of my life. You inspired me then and now.

I found out about Torsos through the amazing guitarist David "Fuze" Fiuczynski. I've heard some brands of fusion and some great live recordings, but this one takes the cake!

The style that Torsos pulls off is a massive attack of fusion. Covering this album alone you'll find elements of jazz, R&B, be-bop, progressive, soul, rock, funk, reggae, and even avante garde and metal influences.

Dean Bowman on vocals is one of the most versatile singers around, not straining in the transitions from skat to soul and even a yodel-like sound. Next you have Daniel Sasownick with hands of fire! I say that because of the quick, consistent percussion work on congas, cowbell, tambourine, and cymbals that sometimes are played beats apart! In combination with Gene Lake on drums it's one hell of a combination. On bass is Fima Ephron with a wanky grooving approach that ties it all together. And who's to forget about the Fuze on guitar!! That's another story difficult to put to words!!

For any fan of the listed styles above, or even that of live albums, this is one for you!!

They're on top-form, making their hybrid, indeed very distinctively, authentically hybrid music. The sound is unmistakably close to what Defunkt was doing in the 80s, or if this doesn't ring a bell, think early-RHCP, but a lot more experimental and jazzier; incorporating a breadth of sophisticated harmonic & rhythmic ideas & execution into each song, yet still managing to deliver that distinctive punk kick into the listener's eager guts.
This is one of the best received albums of SHT (by critics and fans), and a good way to get into them.

The recording could've been better, but it doesn't really get distracting at any point.
