Présentation de l'éditeur

The gossips of a tranquil village on the outskirts of Malminster have a field day spreading the news that Helen Goddard's husband has been seduced by the local femme fatale, Marion Walsh.
Then Marion's charwoman is poisoned by milk obviously intended for her employer, and suspicion naturally falls on Helen Goddard until Marion herself is brutally murdered and Chief Inspector Morrissey discovers that a lot of people wanted her dead.
And then there are the missing children, too...
As Morrissey digs deeper he begins to untangle a hideous web of perversion, envy and murder - and skeletons start to tumble out of some very influential cupboards indeed…

'[A] well-plotted, tersely scripted first novel' Publishers Weekly
'Lots of local colour and colourful characters, a closed circle of suspects… the formula is an old one, but this story shows how much potential the formula still has.' F.E.Pardoe
''...an intriguing little thriller … Kay Mitchell builds a neatly joined web of crime that distributes clues and red herrings in an appealing way.' Romford Post
'A thoughtful piece of detective writing' The Lady

This was my first "read" of Kay Mitchell. I actually searched for authors of police procedurals
on a search engine/library site and her name came up as an author to check out.
And I am so glad I did!! I bought the Kindle version and thought it was a steal at $1.99.
In my opinion it was a well written, well thought-out book. I had it figured out almost from the start - HOWEVER -
I like how she brought it all together. It reminded me of Ruth Rendell's Inspector Wexford series - which I LOVE!
I will definitely be purchasing the 2nd in the series!
There were a few spots that had formatting issues and also
some spots where it wasn't clear who was actually "speaking" - but not too many to really get me confused.
I really enjoyed this book!

The characters were finely drawn, and the plot believable and arresting. The random strange font characters were vexing and distracting. Probably from copy and paste from one word process program to another. Spelling, dropped letters from words all distracted from enjoyment. Otherwise I would have given it 5 stars. An efficient editor would have caught these errors.

I very much like the Inspector Morrissey mysteries. The Inspector is a very likeable guy as are his supporting cast. I am a big fan of the English mysteries - they are good mysteries without being "gory". For me these are books I just feel good while reading - no anxiety, no wanting to hurry to the end - just a relaxing read. The format does have some problems but I didn't find them any worse than a lot of books - in fact, it appears they have been "cleaned up" to some degree. I would definitely recommend these books if one like the Scotland Yard - CID mysteries. Kay Mitchell is a writer worth reading.

Okay, I'll admit to an unreasonable prejudice. I don't really like stories that include children being abused in any way. I also don't appreciate stories with gratuitous sex. Yeah, I know, I'm a religious nut. Anyway, no gratuitous sex here, but the story did include the exploitation and abuse of children. I wish there could be some rating system books. Other than that small complaint, however, the book is overall quite good. Well done!

Quite a good story(A Lively Form of Death by Kay Mitchell) and I did paid very little for it. However, this book was ruined because of the typos etc. Surely there was an editor to catch the many problems in this book. I often find the odd typo or spelling error but this was very bad.
