The pick of the best guitar tomes: Wall's account pulls no punches, cataloguing each of the primal scenes - early performances, indecent exposure, Jim's sexuality, decline and death - with a detached, knowing eye. (GUITARIST)
Présentation de l'éditeur
Think you know the story of Jim Morrison and The Doors? This revelatory and explosive biography from critically acclaimed rock journalist Mick Wall will make you think again.
Think you know how Jim Morrison died?
Think you know who wrote all their hits?
Think you know why Morrison fled to Paris, never to return?
Well now you will with the definitive biography, Love Becomes a Funeral Pyre, of the legendary rock band and their iconic frontman Jim Morrison, written by Mick Wall, one of our most revered music writers and one of the last journalists to interview Ray Manzarek.
The Doors have sold over 100 million albums. Inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, they received a lifetime achievement at the 2007 Grammy Awards, and were the first American band to accumulate eight consecutive gold LPs. Yet the story of The Doors ended as badly as did the 1960s: a startling decade the music and story of The Doors both defined and helped vilify. Along with evoking the cultural milieu of Los Angeles, in Love Becomes A Funeral Pyre Mick Wall captures the true spirit of that tarnished age with a brilliantly penetrating and contemporary investigation into the real story of The Doors.

Secondly, and this is my foremost problem with this book, he relies on largely discredited sources for his conclusions and assertions. Patricia Kinnealy, Morrison's secret Witch wife. A bartender with a story to sell. Old friends of Morrison's who have written books. Books which Unsurprisingly cast their respective authors in larger and more prominent roles than history remembers. Almost all of the sources used in this book clearly have something to gain by associating their names with this story.
Finally, in many places, Wall either references or directly quotes Stephen Davis' book on Morrison, Life Death Legend, which is the most sensational, historically inaccurate book ever released on the subject.
Really heavily pushes the idea Jim was a h...s....l,moreso than any other Doors related book. It is in an obsessive manner,to the point where id say the author is a h...s....l of some type, that wants badly to claim Jim for his "team". Maybe there is some truth to the rumor, but I find it hard to believe- if he was- that somebody somewhere wouldn't of exposed it to the world by now if they had proof or a first(second or third) hand account..Im sure they would of wrote a book about it to cash in like everybody else.Book even suggests Ray was in love with Jim,and not in a friend type of way.Back in the period ALL hippie types were referred to as f..s,whether they were or not because of their long hair-they looked like girls.
The entire book is critical of everyone involved at one point or another, even to the point of name-calling at times.I think the only one not included in this is Jac Holzman. He is always spoken of in a positive light as I remember it.Ray is repeatedly berated and put down throughout the book.Im sure its no accident this was published after his death,as he would of been all over everyone involved in one way or another.Everyone really owes ray bigtime for his efforts to keep the doors alive. It not only furthered his interests, but everyone elses as well.John is talked of as an uptight crybaby, which is usual with any doors book, and even apparent in his own book.Robby is generally spoken of in a positive light, most of the time.Jim and his friends are not spoken of in a positive light, mostly portrayed as scumbags.Jim is mostly refered to as a fat drunken slob a lot of the time, and his poetry is referred to as rantings or jibberish, and is even accused of anal rape at one point. Also Danny Sugerman is barely mentioned, and when he is it is in some sort of insignificant role.He was very important to the doors legacy(as ray was),and pretty much dismissed.
I expect with with Ray and Danny gone, the Doors money will slowly fade away, and leave the other 2 doors with less and less Doors income in the following years,if they don't get on it, take the reins and get to promoting the brand.Though they may not care as im sure they themselves are set for life, but it would be nice for it to be passed on to their heirs of all 4 doors,as a source of income.
Overall worth reading.I would of normally not of bought this book, but I had a gift card and figured what the heck!!.It sure kept me reading on a couple rainy days. I GIVE 3 STARS!
Also, id like to mention I had to censor 3 words in this for it to be accepted, which were words used freely and often in the book...whats this world coming to!?
