Présentation de l'éditeur

From college and AA meetings to his job working in a coffee shop, ex-con Gavin Chandler has a lot going on in his life. All he wants is to leave his past far behind him, especially the father who forced him to run drugs and sell his body. Romance doesn’t even register on his radar.

Then Braxton Irving, a self-employed security guard, shows up at the coffee shop, and Gavin finds he can’t deny his interest. After some serious soul searching, he finally asks Braxton out, and the two embark on a whirlwind affair.

But Braxton hasn’t been completely honest with Gavin about his motivation for coming to the coffee shop that day. Braxton’s feelings for Gavin are real, but so is his commitment to his work. Can their relationship survive once Gavin learns it was founded on a lie?

I must admit, one of my favorite things about romance stories is when the characters initially meet, and when they realize their attraction for each other. I love seeing that spark between characters, and watching it bloom into lust and love.
We don't get that here. When the book begins, the characters have already met and been flirting for several weeks. The story starts with Braxton about to propose their first date.

Mild spoilers ahead

Gavin and Braxton were ridiculously sweet, nice people. Despite their dark backgrounds - and the author makes a point of telling us several times that Braxton used underhanded, duplicitous tactics when working on his previous books - neither EVER has a single moment of negativity. Never a bad day is had, or a bad word is said, or a bad thought crosses their minds. The characters are incredibly...tepid. And their romance is just as bland. It's like being in a room full of beige - it's not bad, but it's certainly not exciting.

When I hit the 30% point and the characters were already having their major upset, I wondered what the rest of the book could possibly be about! Their troubles were resolved handily enough, the characters had sweet boring sex, and they settled in to a very yawn-worthy happily-ever-after. There was a bump in the happy road with a rather-pointless-seeming physical assault, and a bit of parental upset. But really, the second half of the book is a sweet and mindless snoozefest.

Mental note, probably won't read more of Ms. Davis's work.

This was one of those stories where I was really rooting for the hero, one of them in particular, to really get his happily ever after. Gavin Chandler has had a truly tough row to hoe. He was born into the world with a druggie mother and a crime lord father. His mother dies and then his father pimped him out to men and forced him to sell drugs all the while abusing him terribly. Gavin is the one who turns state's evidence against Marcus Chandler, but also is forced to do time.

Now Gavin is out, clean, seeing a counselor, attending college, and works for a gal who is his best friend. His life is coming together, but he's convinced that his past prevents him from having a shot at a good relationship. And a good relationship is what he wants when Braxton Irving begins coming into the bakery for coffee and dessert. Braxton seems just as interested. Gavin lets himself to be persuaded to begin seeing Braxton.

The thing is, Braxton isn't all he seems. Braxton is hiding one big dreadful secret from Gavin that threatens to destroy the beautiful relationship that has sprouted up between the two men. Gavin thinks Braxton is a security consultant because that is the lie Brax told just so he could get close to Gavin. Brax is writing a true crime book about Marcus Chandler and knows that the son, Gavin Chandler's input will make the book bestseller stuff.

It was wonderful watching the two men reach out and form a relationship, but there was also that whole 'Sword of Damocles' hanging over Brax's head for when the truth came out. He wanted to tell the truth, but he didn't want to lose Gavin.

The plot went along at a slower rate when the relationship was forming and was told from both Gavin and Brax's point of view, but there were some exciting and angst-filled moments too.

The characters were great and I liked them both. Gavin deserves a medal for how he handled what life dealt him, but I loved how he and Brax were so good together. Boy could those guys turn on the heat too. Gavin's besties were great as secondary characters too. Those gals totally had his back.

If you are looking for a tender romance between two guys who have been through a lot, give this one a try.

After doing time in prison due to his father's criminal activities, Gavin Chandler just wants to live a normal life. Along with court-ordered AA meetings and therapy sessions, he has a job at a bakery and has made a few good friends. When he meets Braxton Irving, an attractive security expert who seems to be interested in him, Gavin wonders if it might be time to put his horrific past behind him and move on--with Braxton.

Unfortunately, Braxton hasn't told Gavin the whole truth about his reasons for appearing in Gavin's life. His feelings for Gavin are real, but once Gavin learns the truth about him, Braxton is sure he'll lose Gavin forever. When the truth comes out, will the relationship they've been building be destroyed?

Love Less Complicated is a story about a man's quest to build a life and heal after a horrific childhood, and about the results of deception. Gavin survived a childhood of drugs, alcohol, abuse, and worse. After breaking away from his criminal father and helping to put him in jail, Gavin did his own stint in jail. Now sober and free, he's creating a life for himself one step at a time. He likes his job, his therapist is helping him heal, and while he doesn't have a lot of friends, the ones he has are good ones. He feels like his life is on the right track, which is why he is willing to consider starting a relationship. Given the horrors he had endured, I was surprised by how quickly Gavin was willing to jump into sex with Braxton, and how fast he had feelings for the man. More caution, and more fear, would have felt more realistic to me.

Contrary to his claims, Braxton is not a security expert. He's actually a true crime writer, writing a book on Gavin's father. He falls for Gavin right away, but is too afraid of scaring the man off to tell the truth. Of course this leads to some major problems. I was a bit annoyed by Braxton at times. He knows his lies are going to hurt Gavin, yet he can't man up and fess up?

There are other conflicts in the story as well, but none are terribly difficult to solve. Gavin and Braxton fall in love extremely quickly, and given the problems they face, with remarkably little angst or drama. Love Less Complicated is an enjoyable story, but with a slower pace and a little more showing of Gavin's healing process, I think it could have been really great.

I should admit up front that I love ansty romance, so this one is pretty much a no brainer! Of course I loved it!

But I guess I should try to be a little more constructive than that. So here goes, a quick breakdown of what worked, and the very little bit that didn't work for me:

Pros: solid characterization (including minor characters), great conflict, convincing dialogue, and did I mention angsty goodness? I also was completely impressed by the antagonists; as "flat" as they were by their very natures, they didn't come off as flat, because there really are people like that (and I hope that makes sense). Some people really are just sociopaths... or so shallow you want to introduce them to a boot, preferably upside the head. I hated Gloria far more than I hated Daddy Dearest.

Cons: I only had one actual issue with this one, and that was that several of the characters used the same word, "freakin'" (with two of them, I could easily see where one may have picked it up from the other). If it weren't such a distinctive sort of word, I would never have noticed.

I highly recommend this one, especially to people who, like me, like to have their hearts ripped out now and again...hmmm...that probably doesn't sound good..... :-) Seriously, I totally recommend this one to fans of angsy romance.

This book was a very good m/m read. You get to hear from both sides of the characters and what their feeling. You feel for Gavin and what he's been through. You want him to make a life for him and a happily ever after. Brax is strong, sweet and you want him to take care of Gavin BUT you wanna punch Brax for not telling Gavin everything and hurting him so. The sex scenes where awesome they were sweet and rough all rolled into one. The pace of this book was awesome no slow parts. Definitely a good read and this book has everything you would want.
