Dust is everywhere as are guns and other dangers. There is no running water and very little privacy. One of Michele's first introductions or should I say inductions to life in Sudan was fried termites. The children of the compound watched with interest to see if their white mama would take the challenge! She did!
Born without her left hip, leg and kidney never seemed to stop Michele from accomplishing an amazing amount. She also shares a little of her history, where her mission all started and how she ended up in Sudan in 2006.
A well-written, easy to read book that will also challenge you. No, it is not a book telling everyone that they should be in the remotest parts of the world as a missionary. It is a book that shows how the mission field is truly everywhere and the greatest gift you can give is LOVE! Michele has learned what it is to truly love people no matter what situation they are in. She has also learned how to love her Jesus asking Him what He is doing each day and then joining him! She shares the story of Benia who was brought to them as a very troubled 4 month old. As Michele asked the Lord to show her how to help Benia, she knew He was telling her to just love her. She and others gave up 3 weeks of sleep to love on this little baby until LOVE broke through and Benia had peace. Hers is not the only story in this book.
Although Michele is no longer in South Sudan due to health issues, the work that she helped to start continues. Read this book and be INSPIRED! EXCELLENT!
For me, the presence of God was almost tangible in every paragraph. I was reminded of how kind and faithful God was to us during the 16 years we fostered infants and toddlers, giving me insight into their health and their birth families. So her love and God's provision felt familiar.
Ms. Perry admits in the book that she "lost her missionary zeal". Don't get me wrong ... she did preach, and she did teach, but her sermons were generally a simple retelling of the life of Jesus preceded by a time of worship and followed by the working of miracles as the faith of believers (especially the children!!!) was pure and uncomplicated. As her "missionary zeal faded", what she was discovering was His desire for us to love people where they are. As she said, "to a hungry child, love looks like food. To a sick person, love looks like medicine or a miraculous healing." So the book is about Love, and how she learned that Love has a face, and in this book, it is definitely hers.
This simply but elegantly told book is humbling but also encouraging, and might make you want to simply "stop for the one in front of you".
For those of you who are familiar with Heidi Baker and Iris Ministries, you might want to know that Ms. Perry is affiliated with them.
I have read other reviews about "Love has a Face" and I am disappointed to see people offer negative posts because of Michelle's stories of miracles that not only bring healing but also provision and deliverence. Those that have religion find it difficult if not impossible to accept and believe these stories but those of us the have a true and intimate relationship with the lord realize that Michelle's experience only confirms God's Holy Scriptures. I have been blessed to see many of the same type of miracles of healing and deliverence take place not only in Africa but here as well. Please remember without faith it is impossible to please God, but through Jesus Christ all things are possible. The same Holy Spirit promised to those in the Book of Acts is available to each and every believer. Seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit and you will see miracles just like Michelle Perry. Take this wonderful lesson of intimacy with God and show the Love of Jesus to a world in need. Thank you Michelle, I will pray that you and your ministry will be highly favored by the Lord.
